|Fifth Grade Teacher - Mrs. Sandra Medina|
5th Grade Lead Teacher, G/T Certified
Conference Period - 8:15 am - 9:00 am
Hello. My name is Sandra Medina. I have been a teacher for eighteen years. Seventeen of those eighteen years have been with SAISD; first at Barkley Elementary and then at Barkley/Ruiz Academy when the two schools were combined. I originally taught as a Special Education teacher teaching the BAC (Behavior/Academic Curriculum) Unit. Then, in 2003, the BAC unit was moved to another school, meaning that I would have to leave Barkley/Ruiz Elementary. I love Barkley/Ruiz so much and I did not want to leave, so I became a 5th grade teacher, filling a position left when Mr. Antonio Perfecto retired. I have since then taught 5th grade and now serve as the G/T and lead teacher for the grade level.
I consider myself a product of SAISD because much of my foundation years of education were at SAISD. I attended St. Anthony Catholic School for Kinder, first and second grades. My parents found I would receive an equally excellent education in a public school, so I was transferred to James Madison Elementary in SAISD. I continued on to Henry Wadsworth Longfellow Middle School. As much as I wanted to attend Thomas Jefferson High School like my siblings, I felt I would benefit from the specialized classes at Health Careers High School because originally, I wanted to become a pediatrician. From Health Careers, I left San Antonio to attend college at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. I graduated from SMU with a Bachelors degree in Psychology. After graduation from SMU, I received my teaching certification through an Alternate Certification Program at Region 20.
I have been happily married for fourteen years now. I have no children of my own, but I have four dogs that keep me very busy. I also have seven beautiful nieces and nephews that fill me with more love than I can imagine. I have two brothers, two sisters, and both my parents. We are a very close and loving family and I wouldn't have it any other way!
I was honored to be selected as a representative for SAISD at the Sally Ride Science Academy for Upper Elementary Teachers last summer. Pictured here is the SAISD team with the first female astronaut, Dr. Sally Ride (I'm dressed in black above her left shoulder).
