Letter from the principal

The Winter Country

Since 1995, Bonham Academy has been a dual language campus. Today it is the preferred instructional method for about 60% of our students. Soon that number will be greater. The movement began in the late 60's but ramped up at the turn of the century. By the late 90's there was sufficient data to see significant benefits to a Dual Language instructional model. That data was compiled and analyzed by Dr. Wayne Thomas and Dr. Virginia Collier. Today, dual or multiple language instruction is the primary model in most industrialized nations and rapidly developing countries.

On February 2nd and 3rd, Drs. Thomas and Collier presented to and answered questions from parents, teachers, administrators, university professors and students in teacher education programs throughout San Antonio. On the evening of the 3rd, they met with about 50 community members at Bonham Academy, even though it was a First Friday. Thank you to all those who made time to attend.

Recent research in neuroscience and brain development actually identifies the specific areas of the brain which develop through the use of more than one language for instruction. This type of instruction allows neurons to make connections to make sense out of different modes of communication. The long term benefits are shown to act as a multiplier of academic performance and cognitive reasoning. It doesn't make you smarter, but it makes your brain more efficient and you are able to 'think better' about different concepts. These concepts transfer from one language to the other, providing a deeper understanding of the concept in both languages.

For the 17-18 school year, Bonham Academy will extend dual-languages into the middle school. Students will be able to take Spanish Language Arts, along with English Language Arts. Each will focus on the rules, grammar and genres particular to each language and similar in each language. There will be an additional academic course taught in Spanish. The 7th Grade students will participate in a Pre-AP Spanish class designed to prepare them for the Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish Course in 8th Grade and to receive college credit for Spanish, while still in Middle School.

Other things around campus - the house finally moved down the road and grass is growing behind the school. We hope to soon have a play field for the students - at least for soccer. During the week of February 6th - 10th our 6th Grades went to Bamberger Ranch for a two night outdoor environmental learning experience. This is a tradition which has been carried on at Bonham since its early academy days. All middle school students made another environmental excursion to Corpus Christi on February17th. If you are familiar with Bonham Academy you know that, not only is it a Dual Language public charter school, it is also includes Fine Arts and Environmental Science. We are moving forward with supports for each of these three pillars of our Charter.
