Edison High School 2008 Highlights US News & World Report’s Best High Schools 2008 Four San Antonio high schools earned places on U.S. News & World Report' Best High Schools 2008 list. North East Independent School District's International School of the Americas and Northside Independent School District's Health Careers High School each received silver medals. San Antonio Independent School District's Edison High School and Lackland Independent School District's Virginia Allred Stacey Junior/Senior High School won Bronze medals. The magazine analyzed data from the 2005-2006 school year of 18,790 high schools from 40 states to compile the list. Of the 18,790 schools analyzed, only 1,591 made the list. The first step involved measuring student performance along state standardized tests. The second step involved measuring the performance of disadvantaged students. The third step involved determining the school's success in preparing students for college using a college-readiness index score. Edison -- "National AVID Demonstration Site". We are officially an AVID "National Demonstration Site". As they put it, ". . .the best of the best in the AVID world”. This gives Edison HS and our AVID Program national attention. Edison – A Model Design Studio for SLC The Southwest Educational Development Laboratory (SEDL) named Edison HS as a model school for other high schools across the United States to learn from. These visiting US schools have had great things to say about Edison students. State Recognized Academic Decathlon Team Academic Decathlon is a program that provides students an opportunity to experience the challenges of rigorous academic competition through participation in team activities. Decathlon is designed to include students of three academic levels. Each nine-member team consists of three "A" students, three "B" students and three "C" students. The Edison Decathlon Team has enjoyed great success in recent years, including 1st Place District Championships, Regional Top Five, and advancing to State Competition for the last three years.Edison is College-ReadyAt Edison we have 3 great options for earning college credit while earning high school credit.AP-Advanced Placement courses-see brochureDual Credit courses at Edison where you earn high school and college credit at the same time.Dual Credit courses on Saturday at San Antonio College for free.This means you can save thousands of dollars on college tuition and books while at Edison.The new GO CENTER is located in the Career Center next to the counseling office. It is open from 8:30-4:30. Mr. Cunningham can help you apply for college, fill out financial aid applications and scholarships. All of this help and information is free. National Award Winning Cheerleaders, Honey Bears & Golden Girls The Edison Honey Bears consist of the Pep Squad, Cheerleaders and the Golden Girls Dance Team. The Golden Girls have been awarded the title of National Champions for many years. Their high energy is contagious at competitions. When you see this team at football game and event, you will know why the HONEY BEARS are the highlighted group!The Varsity Cheerleaders attended UCA Cheer Camp at UT Austin this summer. The squad won superior awards and ribbons in the categories of chant evaluations, camp champs, extreme routine completions. The squad also won the spirit stick all four days. This recognition is bestowed upon squads than exemplify outstanding spirit, discipline and hard work. Earnisa Brent and Gabriela Garces were named All-Star Cheerleaders, with an invitation to cheer in London. Sandy the Mascot, received a superior trophy as well.
