Our mission at Lamar is to provide all of our students with a quality education that will put them on a solid path to graduate as responsible citizens with the academic and social preparation to pursue higher education, join the military or enter the workforce.

Lamar Elementary School is named for the second president of the Republic of Texas, Mirabeau B. Lamar, the "Father of Education" in Texas. The present location of Lamar is at 201 Parland Place, one block east of Broadway, across from Mahncke Park. There are 16 lots, or approximately three and one-fourth acres, in the site, purchased in 1924 at a cost of $11,384.20. The original building, completed and opened for classes in September 1924, was an eight-room two-story structure, built at a cost of $51,976.90. Only four of the eight classrooms were occupied the first year. There were 40 to 45 pupils in each room, each teacher teaching two or three "grades" or sections. Thus, Lamar School's 1924 enrollment was about 170 pupils. In 1930, two classrooms were added to the west end of the original Lamar School building. The cost was $18,081.27. In 1936, the cafetorium was built, completing the original plans for a 10-classroom structure with a lunchroom. This construction cost $12,769.80. During the summer of 1966, some needed alterations were made at Lamar. One classroom on the second floor was remodeled to create a permanent school library.
