Who was Booker T. Washington?

Booker Taliaferro Washington (April 5, 1856 – November 14, 1915) was an American educator, author, orator, and political leader. He was the dominant figure in the African American community in the United States from 1890 to 1915. Representative of the last generation of black leaders born in slavery, he spoke on behalf of blacks living in the South.

Booker T. Washington Elementary school opened at its present site in 1930 and is named for an educator, author and prominent African American leader Booker T. Washington, whose life continues to be a source of inspiration to all.  Washington rose from slavery to found Alabama´s Tuskegee Institute, and also was an advisor on race relations to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft.
