Physical well-being and developing healthy lifestyles are integral to the success of our students. We teach our young women to make decisions that are based on core values and personal health. Students will receive coursework in health, physical fitness, and emotional strength. Partnerships with Beinestar, Texas AgriLife, San Antonio Food Bank, Girls Inc. and other organizations are also designated to address the wellness curriculum.
Breakfast in the Classroom will be an integral start to our day at YWLA. Students will go through the cafeteria to pick up breakfast and join their PREP teacher in the classroom for breakfast by 8:20 AM. The SAISD Food Services Department is coordinating with us to provide a healthy start for all of our students and teachers. Our cafeteria food meets the strict guidelines of SAISD Local School Nutrition Policy as well as those of the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy. We will take advantage of the wealth of curriculum and nutrition information available on our local Website.
Bienestar Health Curriculum
Senate Bill 42 requires that all Texas Public Middle Schools have a coordinated health program by the start of 2008-2009 school year. SAISD has adopted the Bienestar Program that has four program components: Health, PE/Physical Activity, Cafeteria, and Family Times.
The curriculum will be delivered during PREP class. Lessons range from 30-45 minutes and family homework activities are a component. We will teach the curriculum once a week for 14 weeks in 6th grade and 13 weeks in 7th grade.
San Antonio Food Bank
The San Antonio Food Bank has a health and wellness curriculum that they will tailor to the needs of the YWLA. They will send an instructor out once a week to conduct a lesson focused on healthy eating or physical activity. They will also work closely with the girls to provide service learning opportunities.
Girls, Inc.
The mission of Girls, Inc. is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold! The YWLA has teamed up with Girls, Inc. to provide our summer camp focused on math, science and technology from August 4-8, 2008. In addition, we look forward to participating in many of the research based curriculum activities throughout the school year.
