 Parent & Community Involvement

At the Young Women’s Leadership Academy we honor the commitment that parents have made to enroll their daughters in our program.  Our goal is to build skills and relationships that benefit the young women in our classrooms.  We also want to make the process of sending their daughters to college one that is painless by the time we reach graduation.

The College and Career Center (CCC) will be open to parents and provide an environment where parents can get additional information in both languages.  Video taped sessions with our college counselor will be available as well as live session regarding college entry and study skills.  This center will also serve as a resource for parents to further their education or explore career options.  In addition, resources for parenting, ESL, and GED information or classes will be available.  The physical layout of this room will be one of comfort with cozy furniture, computer access, and a television for viewing informational videos.

This year we are planning to host a series of parent sessions entitled “Parent University.” We’ll be looking at topics such as college admission, rigorous curriculum, and preparing for financial aid.  Our first session will be an overview of the YWLA program and long range curriculum planning and tips and tools for helping your daughter be a successful student.  All parents are invited to begin attending these sessions this year, please know that we will repeat the sessions in this strand each school year.    Our first session will be on September 29, 2009, from 9:30 to 11:30 and then again from 5:30 to 7:30.  Please bring your parent binders so that you can stay organized and keep up with all of the information you’ll be receiving.

Secondly, our sessions for Girls, Inc. will begin for our incoming 6th grade students.  Sessions will be available on Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 PM starting on September 15.  These sessions require a trusted adult to attend with our students.  The nature of the discussion is centered around abstinence and open communication.  It is important that our girls begin these series of classes this fall, please call the office to let us know which evening you will be attending. We would also like for our 7th and 8th grade girls and parents that are new to the campus or who did not participate last year to sign up.  Dinner and childcare will be provided.

Parents will be encouraged to lead some of the club activities to offer the students a wide variety of activities and to develop parents as leaders. Peer mentors will begin in 08-09 where incoming families will be paired with families that already have young women attending our campus.  These mentors will serve as a liaison to how to navigate the campus and provide parent-to-parent support for the academic rigor at the Young Women’s Leadership Academy.

Student led conferences make students more responsible for their learning and increase communications between parent and child.  Students will review their work according to the class syllabus and pre-designed rubric.  They will also share their binders, goal setting, and college portfolio with their parents according to the framework of the conference.

Community members are encouraged to participate in our seminars and to utilize our facility as well.  The web page will have updated information regarding campus events.

The YWLA will begin the process of creating a new parent/teacher association. This will be an organization where the school’s community works together to improve the environment for the young girls that attend the school.
