The public is invited to learn how to help make this landmark East Side campus a true community asset. The goal is part of Wheatley’s designation as an EastPoint community host school. This partnership between the host schools and their communities is designed to provide an integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development and engagement, leading to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities.

June 11 (Wed) — Citywide 2014 Fit Family Challenge
5:30 p.m. at Whittier Middle School, 2101 Edison Drive                  
Whittier is one of the city’s eight host sites for this fifth-annual event to run through Aug. 8 featuring fun fitness activities aimed at motivating families to break away from a sedentary lifestyle. The 2014 Fit Family Challenge is presented by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas and organized by San Antonio Sports.

June 9–13 — GEAR UP summer academies
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  at locations listed below.
Members of the class of 2017 can get a jump start on college and careers through the following academies. Teens may participate in the academies of their choice, regardless of which SAISD high school they attend. There will be 30 offered over the course of the summer. The activities are part of the incoming sophomores’ participation in Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, designed to help them prepare for success in higher education and beyond.

● Design Studio at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.

● Entrepreneurship at Lanier High School, 1514 W. César Chávez Blvd.

● Media Arts at Brackenridge High School, 400 Eagleland Drive

● Media and Communications at Travis Early College High School, 1915 N. Main Ave.

● So You Want to be a CHEF! at Lanier High School, 1514 W. César Chávez Blvd.

● So You Want to be a Doctor! at Fox Tech High School, 637 N. Main Ave.

● Urban Gardening at Burbank High School, 1002 Edwards St.

June 9–14 — CodeHS – Program It! GEAR UP summer academy
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  at  Highlands High School, 3118 Elgin Ave.

June 9–20 — Body Bonanza: Exploring the “Icks, Oohs and Awwws” GEAR UP summer academy
9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fox Tech HS, 637 N. Main Ave.

June 9–20 — SAISD Summer Musical Theatre and Visual Art Camp
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
About 50 aspiring thespians in grades 6-12 will be introduced to the foundation skills of theater including character development, costume design, set design and stage lighting, while visual arts students will hone their skills through producing posters, merchandise and other items in preparation of show time. The camp will conclude with a performance of “Annie Jr.” on June 21.

June 9–26 — STEM Camp GEAR UP summer academy
9 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Mondays-Thursdays at the St. Philip’s Southwest College campus, 800  Quintana Road

June 10-28 — Summer enrichment
7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Washington Elementary School, 1823 Nolan St.
Supervised academic and enrichment opportunities will be offered in partnership with the Greater San Antonio All Stars.

June 9 thru July 25  — Infinite Possibilities! GEAR UP summer academy
9 a.m. to 3 p.m.  at Sam Houston High School, 4635 E. Houston St.

June 9 thru July 31 — SA Youth Programs
10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Lanier High School, 1514 W. César Chávez Blvd. and Jefferson High School, 723 Donaldson Ave.
Supervised recreational opportunities for teens enrolled at these two high schools will be offered in partnership with San Antonio Youth.

June 9 thru Aug. 15 — Seamless Summer Nutrition Program
7:30 to 8:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 44 SAISD schools. Serving dates vary by campus. 
Free breakfast and lunch are served to anyone 18 years old and younger. The federally funded nutrition program is available to districts like SAISD in which large numbers of students receive free meals during the school year.

June 9 thru Aug 15 — SA Youth Programs
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at centers throughout San Antonio
Students from Maverick and Pershing elementaries are eligible for supervised free learning opportunities and activities including technology, physical education, music, culture, arts and other fun activities through SA Youth.

June 10-28 — Summer enrichment
7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Washington Elementary School, 1823 Nolan St.
