Dr. Harris will visit with the inaugural student cohort of the Cyber P-TECH program, which opened this August to 9th graders as a school-within-a-school at Sam Houston High School.

His visit to San Antonio is part of the Sylvan Learning and National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) to expand STEM education opportunities.

Dr. Harris graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1974. He earned a bachelor’s degree and two master’s degrees, before earning a Doctorate of Medicine from Texas Tech University. He later worked at NASA, becoming the first African American to walk in space.

Dr. Harris holds several faculty and board appointments and is the recipient of numerous awards. He currently is CEO of NMSI, CEO of Vesalius Ventures and the founder of the Harris Foundation, which support math and science education for America’s youth.

The students Dr. Harris will address are part of the city’s first Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH), which allows students to earn a high school diploma, an associate degree, a two-year post-secondary certificate or industry certification, and complete work-based training through internships, apprenticeships, or other job-training programs.

The Cyber P-TECH at Sam Houston High School program has a focus on preparing students with the skills, credentials and industry-specific associate degrees necessary for high-wage, high-demand careers in cybersecurity.

The visit with Dr. Harris is one example of how students are mentored by industry professionals. On Nov. 7, students also participated in a job shadow day at Accenture Federal Services.

Cyber P-TECH ultimately will become a 9-12th grade high school, with a new grade being phased in each year. The program currently is accepting applications for incoming 9th graders for the 2020-2021 school year. For more information, visit www.saisd.net/cyberptech or www.saisd.net/apply

* All Sam Houston High School 9th-graders are temporarily housed at the site of the former W.W. White Elementary School, while extensive construction is underway at the main high school campus. Sam Houston is getting significant upgrades thanks to funding of more than $33 million through Bond 2016.
