As parents drive their brand-new middle schooler to the cafeteria entrance, the young woman will step out and enter the cafeteria to participate in the annual White Rose Ceremony. The student will emerge from another cafeteria exit with a white rose and certificate, ready to be congratulated by her family.
The annual ceremonial process – this year being conducted as a socially-distant, drive-through event – welcomes students into the YWLA sisterhood. Students receive a white rose at induction, a pink rose as they transition into high school, and a red rose at graduation.
YWLA empowers young women to achieve their fullest potential with a rigorous, college-preparatory education that is free of cost to students. YWLA is one of three single-gender campuses in the District. SAISD has the only public single-gender schools in Bexar County.
