Texas Loves Teachers Tour visits SAISD campuses
04/08/2021

HEB Texas Loves TeacherAs if teachers at San Antonio ISDs Gonzales Early Childhood Education Center and Collins Garden Elementary School couldn’t love local grocery store chain H-E-B any more, the feelings now go even deeper. Last week, the campuses were selected as two of 50 stops on H-E-B's statewide Texas Loves Teachers Tour.

“We are here today to celebrate Texas teachers,” said Christa Aldrich, literacy program manager at H-E-B and former SAISD educator. “It’s so important that we give teachers the love they deserve. They have had a rough year. They have turned on a dime to help children and do the best they can with the resources that they have. They deserve every pat on the back, every ‘cheers’ and every ‘olé’ that we can give them.”

The grocery store postponed its annual Excellence in Education Awards gala due to the pandemic and instead launched the Texas Loves Teacher Tour. The Tour started its caravan in San Antonio last week and will continue across the state, visiting 50 public schools, school districts and early childhood education centers within 50 days.

Each stop will include an appreciation event for school staff, including $20,000 in gift cards. Public voting determined the location of the 50 tour stops. In addition to thousands of dollars in gift cards, H-E-B also provided lunch for each campus and all sorts of freebies and treats.

“Oh my god, I couldn’t believe it when my name was called!” said Gracie Guerrero, instructional assistant at Gonzales who won a $500 H-E-B gift card. “This is my first time winning anything and I really appreciate it. Thank you, H-E-B!”

The 2022 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards will return to the traditional nomination, application and selection process. Nominations are now open and will remain open until Oct. 18, 2021, with a Dec. 6, 2021 application deadline. The 2022 H-E-B Excellence in Education Awards will distribute $430,000 to teachers, principals, school districts, school boards and early childhood education centers at a gala celebration in Austin, Texas on April 30, 2022.

H-E-B launched the Excellence in Education Awards program in cooperation with the Texas Association of School Administrators in 2002 as a positive way to support public education in Texas. It has become the largest monetary program for educators in the state, spotlighting best practices and celebrating the passion and creativity of Texas educators.

“One of the things we love about SAISD is how innovative the District is and how willing to try new things; they are so supportive of that,” said Aldrich. “If it is what is best for kids, that is what the District is going to do. Coming back to where my roots are is always heartwarming.”
