Subject expert: Coordination of student support through in-house digital tool

Expert: Carmen Thatcher, director of Student and Academic Support Services

Supporting the whole child – socially, emotionally and academically – takes a team of experts, and SAISD has developed an in-house, digital application to streamline its efforts to ensure students receive the support and resources they need. The Support Services Communications Tracker, developed by SAISD’s Office of Continuous Improvement, allows for a holistic view of each child’s needs. Multiple stakeholders – including social workers, school counselors, family and community engagement specialists, disability services specialists, and Communities in Schools personnel – input their home visits, phone calls and follow up into the system, which has applicable privacy settings. More than 250 staff members are piloting the data collection tool, and because of the coordinated effort, the district is seeing positive results in areas such as attendance, academics, mental health, and medical and safety issues.
