Master Teacher Initiative

About the Master Teacher Initiative (MTI) 1.0

MTI 1.0 is the district’s first iteration to address the intended purpose and goals of MTI. It is supported by the federal Teacher Incentive Fund (TIF) Grant which will sunset in the next couple of years. MTI 1.0 has been primarily designed to recognize and retain teachers of STAAR-tested subjects, and designations are based on T-TESS and student achievement.

A Master Teacher is eligible for a $15,000 stipend annually for working additional days and time (average of five hours per week) beyond the days and time specified in the traditional teacher scheduleThe Master Teacher stipends are 100% grant funded; continuation of the stipends are dependent on the availability of grant funds.

Continued eligibility for Master Teachers under MTI 1.0 is contingent upon completing additional days and time; meeting annual performance criteria, including T-TESS and student performance/growth measures; and continuing to teach in the content area and grade level initially hired for.

Master Teachers accepting assignments in secondary math, secondary science, bilingual, or special education may be eligible for additional stipends.

What is the start date for Master Teachers for the 2020-2021 school year?

The expected start date for new SAISD Master Teachers is Monday, July 13, 2020.

How can I check my eligibility for the role?

All Master Teachers will be classroom teachers with a proven track record of success. The job description posted online contains all eligibility criteria. Teachers who pass the initial screening will be moved to the pool of eligible candidates for principals to interview.

If I pass the screening process, am I guaranteed a role?

No, principals have the final say in hiring for Master Teachers. After passing the eligibility screening, your submissions will be rated using rubrics. Candidates who move beyond the initial screening process will participate in on-campus or virtual interviews, depending on candidate location and principal preference.

If I’m new to SAISD, can I choose the school where I’ll teach?

No, Master Teachers are placed based on student and campus need.

Is there any additional training related to the Master Teacher role?

Master Teachers will be invited to a variety of additional training opportunities throughout the year including in person, virtual, and asynchronous professional learning.

Will the Master Teacher role look the same on every campus?

No, principals determine classroom placements and responsibilities of their Master Teachers, aligned to their Campus Improvement Plans.

Are there additional hours required of Master Teachers?

Master Teachers will be expected to work five additional hours per week to fulfill expectations associated with their roles. Because principals will have the ability to tailor the role to their campus needs, responsibilities may vary slightly from campus to campus. Master Teachers will also be required to complete additional non-contract days that may include professional learning or providing instruction to students.

I am located outside the San Antonio area. Can I complete the application steps remotely?

Yes, we can make accommodations to ensure all eligible candidates are considered. Please ensure your teaching certification has been transferred to Texas to meet eligibility requirements.

Are non-core teachers eligible to be a Master Teacher?

Yes, in some cases. Please check the SAISD job postings for specific non-core Master Teacher roles.
