National Board Certification

National Board Certification was designed to develop, retain, and recognize accomplished teachers and to generate ongoing improvement in schools nationwide. Created by teachers, for teachers, the National Board Standards represent a consensus among educators about what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.

In order to qualify, teachers must have:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Hold a valid, professional teaching certificate
  • 3 years of successful teaching as the teacher of record

The district is currently developing a cohort experience to support teachers interested in pursuing the National Board Certification. A pilot cohort experience for campus educators at TIF-funded campuses is being launched for the 2020-21 school year. Although additional cohort opportunities may be available in the future, you can also visit the National Board website to learn more.

The certification process requires that teachers demonstrate standards-based evidence of the positive effect they have on student learning in alignment with the Five Core Propositions:

  1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
  2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach those subjects to students.
  3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning.
  4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience.
  5. Teachers are members of learning communities.

Teachers must exhibit a deep understanding of their students, content knowledge, use of data and assessments and teaching practice. They must also show that they participate in learning communities and provide evidence of ongoing reflection and continuous learning.
