AN INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE WORLD SCHOOL

IB World Schools share a common philosophy—a commitment to high quality, challenging, international education that is encouraged here at Luther Burbank High School.

Luther Burbank High School is an International Baccalaureate World school1 for the Diploma Program. Burbank High School has been an IB world school since 1998, when it was first authorized, that’s nearly 20 years of experience being an IB World School. In order to better serve our students and the Luther Burbank High School community, Burbank High School is taking the initial steps to begin the process to become a candidate school for the Middle Years Program (MYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organization.

The State of Texas, through Texas Senate Bill 111in 2005, has guaranteed a student who earns an IB Diploma, 24 hours of college credit to any publically funded college or university across the state of Texas. Essentially, a student can offer themselves the opportunity to walk into college as a sophomore.

"We are not apart from this world, rather We are a part of this world,"

The IB program is an internationally respected college-prep curriculum that aims to develop the intellectual, personal, emotional and social skills to live, learn, and work in a global world.

Through IB, great emphasis is placed on intercultural understanding and global engagement, and the IB Diploma represents one of the highest standards in college-preparatory education.

1 Only schools authorized by the IB Organization can offer any of its four academic programs: the Primary Years Program (PYP), the Middle Years Program (MYP), the Diploma Program or the Career-related Program (CP). Candidate status gives no guarantee that authorization will be granted.

About Us

In 1937, Luther Burbank Vocational High School became the only school in San Antonio to offer an agriculture program on a 75-
acre student farm laboratory. The high school was named after Luther Burbank (1849-1926), a famous California horticulturist
who introduced more than 800 varieties of plants (fruits, vegetables, nuts and grains, and ornamental flowers). Terrell F. Gates was
the first principal at Burbank HS. His tenure was from 1937 to 1971.
