George E. Kelly Elementary is pleased to announce that our School Counselor, Ms. Laura Serrato is a 2014-15 SAISD Foundation Mini-Grant winner. Ms. Serrato wrote the mini-grant to purchase the Why Try Program. The Why Try Program is a strength-based approach to helping youth overcome their challenges and improve outcomes in the areas of truancy, behavior, and academics. Youth are taught social and emotional principles through a series of 10 pictures that teaches a discrete principle. These visuals are then reinforced by music and physical activities. The program's unique multisensory approach addresses a wide span of diverse learning types. The counselor will implement the program through school-wide, classroom guidance and counseling sessions.
