If you are interested in serving as a member of Burbank's School Library Advisory Committee (SLAC), please submit an application by Wednesday, October 29, 2025 Committee applications will be reviewed, and committee members will be selected and trained. If you have any additional questions, contact your campus librarian or principal.
Roles and Responsibilities of the School Library Advisory Committee (SLAC):
Who is on the committee? Your School Library Advisory Committee will include a school administrator, two teachers, two parents with a student at the school, and the campus or district librarian (who will not vote).
When does the committee meet? When a parent submits a formal request to reconsider a book, all committee members will meet and receive the challenged book and other relevant information to begin the review process.
What does the committee do? Every committee member will read the book in its entirety and decide if it follows the district's policy for library materials. The committee will then make a final decision on whether the book should stay in the library.
What happens after the decision? The committee will write a report summarizing its findings and final decision and submit it to the principal by a specific date.
