We want to take a moment to emphasize the importance of daily attendance and your partnership in ensuring your child is present and on time each day. School begins promptly at 8:45 a.m. Instruction starts immediately, and every period of the day is important to your child’s academic success.
When students miss class, they miss direct instruction, guided practice, discussions, and opportunities to ask questions. Even a single absence can create gaps in learning that are difficult to recover. Chronic absences often lead to lower grades, increased stress, and, in some cases, delays in earning credits needed for promotion or graduation.
Please be reminded that students must meet the 90% attendance requirement to receive credit for their courses. Failure to meet this requirement will result in an invitation to attend a meeting with a retention specialist through the Bexar County court system. Our goal is always to support families early and prevent students from reaching that point. Current attendance rate for the year is 82.42%
As we approach Spring Break, we encourage you to continue reinforcing the importance of attendance. Friday, March 6th, is a student holiday. Students will return to school on March 16th, which will now serve as a winter weather make-up day. We look forward to welcoming all students back, ready to learn.
Academic Support: We encourage students to stay on top of their learning. For those who need additional help, TSI tutoring is available. Please review the tutoring schedule and the flyer included in this week’s newsletter for more information.
Thank you for your continued support of our students and our school community. Let’s have a great week at Highlands!
Respectfully,
Adrian Hid
Principal, Highlands High School

Attendance Focus: Year to Date
Last week’s attendance was 84.71%, and our current overall attendance rate is 83.61%. Our Campus Improvement Plan goal is 90% or higher, and daily attendance plays a critical role in student achievement and success. Our current attendance trend is downward.
Arrival, Attendance, and Instructional Time: Campus doors open at 8:15 a.m., and class instruction begins promptly at 8:45 a.m. It is important that students arrive on time and report directly to class. Tardiness affects attendance, disrupts learning, and reduces instructional time. We greatly appreciate your support in ensuring students arrive on time.
TELPAS testing is quickly approaching, and we are preparing our students to do their very best. As part of this preparation, TELPAS intervention begins today, January 20th, with a focus on strengthening language development and student confidence.
Additionally, beginning January 21st through January 30th, we will conduct our STAAR Simulation. These practice assessments help students become familiar with testing expectations and build readiness for the official STAAR exams. Please review the important upcoming dates and ensure that your child is present during these important assessment days.
We also ask for your continued partnership by completing the family survey, which is currently available. Your feedback is valuable and helps us better support our students and families. Your child will receive 2 hours of seat time upon completion of the survey.
Please check out the survey flyer for access to the survey and other important updates. Thank you for your continued support, trust, and partnership. We are grateful for our Highlands families and community as we work together to ensure our students receive the education and opportunities they deserve.
On Tuesday, January 21st, our Highlands softball team will be hosting a fundraiser. We invite you to support our students by participating and sharing this opportunity with friends and family.
As we move forward together, we are reminded that “consistency and reflection lead to growth.” When students attend school regularly and reflect on their learning, success follows.
Hall Pass Expectations: Student safety remains a top priority. During the school day, students are expected to remain in class unless they have a properly authorized hall pass.
Hall passes allow us to monitor student movement and ensure students are in their assigned locations at all times.
We appreciate your support in reinforcing these expectations with your child, as they help maintain a safe and orderly campus environment.
Please note that restrooms are available on each floor, and students should use the restroom located on the same floor as their class. Please remind your child that being in an unauthorized location without permission may result in disciplinary action.
Counseling Department Newsletter: Our Counseling Newsletter is available for your review. We encourage families to take time to read it for important information, resources, and student support updates.
Seat Time Hours: If your child has been denied course credit, they will have the opportunity to make up the required seat time hours. We will continue to notify parents and guardians of any denied credits through the end of the school year.
Please note that for any course in which credit has been denied, if the student does not complete all required seat time hours, they will be required to retake the course. Please continue encouraging your child to arrive on time every day.
Twilight Tutoring: Additional academic support is available through our Twilight Tutoring program:
Days: Monday–Thursday
Time: 4:15 p.m. – 6:15 p.m.
Action Required: Parent Consent for Health Services
Due to a new state law (SB 12), a parent consent form is now required for non-emergency health services. Emergency care will always be provided. Please sign and return the consent form included in the newsletter as soon as possible.

🗓️💸 SAISD Class of 2026, mark your calendars! ️Submit your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) before Jan. 15, 2026, for priority consideration.
FAFSA will help determine your eligibility for federal and state financial aid – like grants (free money), scholarships and affordable loans. (Private and two-year institutions may have different deadlines.)
To get started, you’ll need student and parent/guardian StudentAid.Gov accounts (FSA ID). (Plus, have your personal information and income/asset information – like 2024 Federal Income Taxes – on hand.)
Your College Bound Advisor or counselor can walk you (and your family) through the process. Stop by your school’s college hub or start your application at https://studentaid.gov/
