Teacher Appreciation Week may have been last week, but there is no shortage of appreciation year-round. This week is no exception. Two Burbank High School agricultural science teachers and the school’s farm manager – Jeffrey Braune, Mark Bindseil, and Ryan Koltermann – are personally stepping in to hand-pick more than 2,000 cabbage plants and donating the harvest to the San Antonio Food Bank at the peak of freshness for the vegetable.

Each year, Burbank High School students in the school’s agricultural science classes and FFA chapter plant, tend, and harvest cabbage, in conjunction with the Palo Alto Horticulture Department. In past years, the harvest has resulted in more than a ton of produce being donated to the food bank.

Because of social distancing practices, students are unable to be the harvesters this spring. But thanks to the hard work of two teachers and the school’s farm manager, the food bank will still receive the donation. The timing is especially critical this year, as the donation comes during a global pandemic that has profoundly increased food insecurity at the local level.

At approximately noon, the first load will be ready to be delivered to the food bank.
