Virtual PromThe term “senior prom” brings forth a variety of mental pictures. Sequined dresses. Tuxes. Flower corsages. Magic shows. Wait! What? Magic shows? Yes, there was indeed a magic show at this year’s Advanced Learning Academy’s virtual prom as school staff was determined to make treasured tradition happen despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The virtual prom showcased the strong community of the school,” said Tiffany Jenkin, ALA’s program coordinator. “It was uplifting to see how many students, teachers and administrators came out to have a good time and enjoy each other’s company.”

The agenda was admittedly not that of a traditional prom. It began with a fashion show during which about 40 of the attendees showed off their outfits, some in standard prom gowns and tuxes while others featured COVID Couture and Quarantine Chic looks.

“My favorite part about the virtual prom was getting to see all of my friends dressed up in their prom outfits and having fun despite the fact that we couldn't see each other in person,” said student Paulina Rodriguez. “I think that although it didn't make up for the many in-person experiences we missed, virtual prom was a nice way for us to connect with each other.”

The event included a cumbia lesson, free-style dancing to the tunes of art teacher-turned-DJ Galen McQuillen, speeches from the prom court, magic show, and a slow dance to end the evening.

“In a time when students are isolated and depression and anxiety is at an all-time high, the virtual prom served as a reminder to everyone, even if just for a little while, that we're all in this together, and that we're all still a school family at ALA,” said Jenkins.
