San Antonio ISD and other districts around the state and nation have moved their learning online to lessen the spread of COVID-19. Educators are finding ways to connect with their students, and their families, in a variety of ways. Rick Flores, principal of Rhodes Middle School, wanted to find a way to connect with his parents even though it was impossible to meet face-to-face.
“Our chief aim is to ensure that our families feel the support from our campus,” he said. “As we all transition to online learning, not only must we be ‘high-tech’ but we must remain ‘high-touch’ with our families.”
With the help of Collin Doggett, Rhodes’ Verizon Innovative Learning technology coach, Flores held his first Virtual Coffee with 32 parents earlier this week.
“By all accounts it was a huge success,” said Flores. “It was an honor to address my parents in this platform and assure them that they are important to us and that we love and miss our Wildcat students.”
The hour and a half presentation not only provided an overview of the new virtual learning happening at the school, but also allowed parents to voice their concerns and questions directly to Flores.
“They were super appreciative of the opportunity to come together in this virtual space and hear directly from their principal,” said Flores. “We will continue to meet with Wildcat Nation families in this virtual space moving forward as long as online learning continues.”
Rhodes Middle School’s Principal's Coffee will be held every Monday at 11 a.m. in English and at noon in Spanish.
