San Antonio ISD school groups sponsored at least 11 of the 80 altars at last weekend’s Muertos Fest at Hemisfair.
The event, in its 10th year, brings together traditional art and culture with live music and entertainment to celebrate the Day of the Dead. Festivities included live performances and the largest open altar exhibition in San Antonio.
Festival attendees were able to vote on their favorite altar, and at the end of the weekend, Lanier High School Art Club was announced the winner for their poignant altar honoring the 19 Robb Elementary students and two teachers who lost their lives in Uvalde in May.
Art teachers Jennifer Arce and Michael O’Neill worked with a team of 36 students to construct the altar. The team, which met on Thursdays, worked since August to design and build the piece, which contained individual desks for the honored teachers and students.
“Over the course of a few meetings, the students collectively made the decision to honor the Uvalde victims,” O’Neill said. “They decided to create a main altar to look like the teachers' desks and then created 19 smaller desks that become altars honoring each of the children. Each desk is tailored to that particular Robb Elementary student, featuring their interests, hobbies, favorite colors, and sports.”
Throughout the event, the powerful display drew in crowds. The work was featured on KSAT-12, Texas Public Radio, Telemundo, and on Morning Edition on NPR. O’Neill said the Art Club was thrilled to be part of such an important event, but to win the contest was even more exciting.
“It was an honor for us to be a part of the exhibition,” O’Neill said. “It has been so great for the students to win, they are thrilled.”
The altar will be on display at Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center at Galeria Guadalupe, 723 S. Brazos, from Nov. 2 to Dec. 2, and can be viewed from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Nov. 2, and throughout the month by appointment.

Lanier gana el Festival de Día de los Muertos con emotivo altar para Uvalde
Los grupos escolares de San Antonio ISD patrocinaron por lo menos nueve de los 80 altares que se exhibieron en el Festival de Muertos en Hemisfair el fin de semana pasado.
El evento, que se ha llevado a cabo los últimos 10 años, mezcla el arte y la cultura tradicionales con música y entretenimiento en vivo para celebrar el Día de los Muertos. La celebración incluyó presentaciones en vivo y la exhibición más grande de altares en San Antonio.
Los asistentes pudieron votar por su altar preferido, y al terminar el fin de semana, el Club de Arte de Lanier High School fue anunciado como el ganador pro su emotivo altar que honró a los 19 estudiantes y dos maestras de Robb Elementary que perdieron sus vidas en Uvalde en mayo.
Los maestros de arte Jennifer Arce y Michael O’Neill trabajaron con un equipo de 36 estudiantes para construir el altar. El equipo se reunió los jueves a partir de agosto para diseñar y construir la exhibición que contenía escritorios individuales para las maestras y los estudiantes honrados.

Cada escritorio está personalizado para cada estudiante de Robb Elementary, incluye sus intereses, pasatiempos, colores y deportes favoritos”.
A lo largo del evento, la conmovedora exhibición atrajo la atención de los participantes. Su trabajo se destacó en KSAT-12, Texas Public Radio, Telemundo y en Morning Edition en NPR. O’Neill dijo que el Club de Arte estaba muy entusiasmado de ser parte de un evento tan importante, pero ganar el concurso fue aún más emocionante.
“Fue un honor para nosotros ser parte de la exhibición”, dijo O’Neill. “Fue genial que los estudiantes ganaran, están muy contentos”.
El altar se exhibirá en el Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center en la Galería Guadalupe, 723 S. Brazos, del 2 de nov. al 2 de dic., y puede apreciarse de 10 a.m. a 9 p.m. el 2 de nov. y el resto del mes con una cita.
