Students at Lanier High School are coming back to a brand new library space this fall.
As part of the school’s $29.8 million in Bond 2020 improvements, the new library is a bright, inviting space filled with spaces for individual and collaborative work, and of course, books.
“When we think about the importance of reading serving as the gateway to literacy — this is the opportunity that our kids will have,” said Dr. Ricky Flores, principal of Lanier High School. “Our students will have access not only to come in and study, but they will have a quiet space where they can go if they need additional support. We want the library to be one of the hubs of learning here on our campus. We’re excited for the opportunity it’s going to give for our students as we continue to focus on improving academic achievement.”
After construction was finished, a team of dedicated Digital Teacher Librarians from around the district spent a week over the summer to help get the interior of the space set up for students.
Patricia Nester (Japhet Elementary), Belinda De Jesus (Bonham Academy), Paula Lenington (Hawthorne Academy), and Raquel Valdivia (Woodlawn Hills Elementary) transformed the recently renovated space filled with crated boxes into what will soon be a vibrant hub of learning.
“Librarians depend on each other and help each other out when there is a need,” Nester said. “As librarians, our professional circle is a very small group of people, dedicated to preparing a place that our students will enjoy and utilize. Our students’ success then becomes our success. We are here because of them.”
Their intense effort involved unpacking countless books, meticulously inventorying the collection, and carefully "weeding" and withdrawing outdated or damaged materials. This rigorous process ensures that the library provides only the highest-quality, most engaging, and most relevant resources for high school students.
They expertly organized the entire collection using the Dewey Decimal System, making it easy for students and staff to find exactly what they need. Beyond just managing the books, they thoughtfully designed and began setting up the entire library layout, creating an inviting and functional environment for everyone.
“I jumped at the opportunity to help bring the library to life,” Valdivia said. “I especially love the blue, back wall that houses the graphic novels. I envision students gathering and enjoying the welcoming environment we helped put together. It was a fantastic opportunity to serve our SAISD libraries in this capacity.”
Their efforts helped ensure that Lanier High School's new library is a fully functional and welcoming space ready for not only this year’s students, but to inspire readers and learners for years to come. Their commitment to building rich, accessible, and engaging library collections is invaluable to our students' academic growth and love of reading.
“Those librarians understand this is all about the children,” Flores said. “I can’t thank them enough. They truly are unsung heroes. To organize and place all the books in the right location can be a monumental task. We are grateful for them and the time that the district invested in them to come here to help.”
For De Jesus, it was a deeply personal mission. Her father, who passed away in January, was a 1958 Lanier alumnus, who shared many stories about JROTC, football games, and times at the Malthouse.
“It was just a quiet tribute to my dad and all his beautiful memories there at Lanier High School,” De Jesus said. “It was bittersweet walking into my father's alma mater. I kept imagining walking on the exact same ground my father once did. It was a way to feel close to him again. The library turned out beautiful. I'm proud to have been a part of the team who helped reestablish it.”

Una vez que se finalizó la construcción, un equipo de bibliotecarios digitales especializados de todo el distrito dedicó una semana durante el verano a ayudar a acondicionar el interior del espacio para los estudiantes.

Su gran esfuerzo implicó desempacar innumerables libros, hacer un inventario detallado de la colección, y cuidadosamente "deshierbar" y retirar materiales que ya no servían o que estaban dañados. Este riguroso proceso asegura que la biblioteca solo ofrezca recursos de la más alta calidad, los más interactivos y más relevantes para los estudiantes de preparatoria.
Organizaron de manera experta toda la colección utilizando el sistema decimal Dewey, lo que facilita a los estudiantes y al personal encontrar exactamente lo que necesitan. Más allá de solo administrar los libros, diseñaron cuidadosamente y comenzaron a configurar todo el diseño de la biblioteca, creando un ambiente acogedor y funcional para todos.
"Aproveché la oportunidad de ayudar a dar vida a la biblioteca", dijo Valdivia. “Me encanta especialmente la pared azul del fondo, donde se encuentran las novelas gráficas. Imagino a los estudiantes reuniéndose y disfrutando del ambiente acogedor que hemos ayudado a crear. Fue una oportunidad fantástica para servir a nuestras bibliotecas de SAISD en esta capacidad”.
Sus esfuerzos ayudaron a garantizar que la nueva biblioteca de Lanier High School sea un espacio totalmente funcional y acogedor, listo no solo para los estudiantes de este año, sino también para inspirar a los lectores y estudiantes en los próximos años. Su compromiso de construir colecciones bibliotecarias abundantes, accesibles e interactivas es invaluable para el crecimiento académico y el amor de nuestros estudiantes por la lectura.
“Estas bibliotecarias entienden que todo esto es para los estudiantes”, dijo Flores. “No puedo agradecerles lo suficiente. Son verdaderas heroínas anónimas. Organizar y colocar todos los libros en el lugar correcto puede ser una tarea monumental. Estamos agradecidos con ellas y con el tiempo que el distrito invirtió en ellas para que vinieran aquí a ayudar”.
Para De Jesus, fue una misión profundamente personal. Su padre, que falleció en enero, fue alumno de Lanier en 1958, que compartió muchas historias sobre JROTC, partidos de fútbol y tiempos en el Malthouse.
“Fue un homenaje silencioso a mi padre y todos sus hermosos recuerdos allí en Lanier High School”, comentó De Jesus. “Fue agridulce caminar en el alma mater de mi padre. No dejaba de imaginarme caminando por el mismo suelo que mi padre pisó alguna vez. Fue una manera de sentirme cerca de él otra vez. La biblioteca quedó hermosa. Estoy orgullosa de haber sido parte del equipo que ayudó a restablecerla”.
