SAISD schools will among the groups celebrating Día de los Muertos by creating altars, or ofrendas, at the annual Muertos Fest celebration. Bonham Academy, Cooper Academy at Navarro, Poe Middle School, Whittier Middle School, and YWLA Primary art classes have produced altars to join one of the largest Day of the Dead celebrations in the nation.

Oct. 25 (Sat) – SAISD “Día de Teatro” Theatre Enrichment Day

Students in the Theatre Leadership Committee in SAISD are leading the districtwide Day of Theatre. Representatives from theatre programs at each district high school comprise the group, which is offering the enrichment opportunity to San Antonio ISD middle and high school students interested in theatre. Participants will be divided into groups, which will each be assigned a Greek myth and a box of items to incorporate into an original production to showcase at 1 p.m.

Oct. 27 (Mon) – Women in Cybersecurity Careers Panel

Junior Achievement of South Texas and SA WORX are bringing women who work in the cybersecurity field to talk with students about their educational and employment journeys. The panel includes Greg Rivas – Information Security Senior Manager (Accenture Federal Services), Dr. Rita Mitra – Professor of Practice in the College of AI, Cyber and Computing Department of Information Systems and Cybersecurity (UTSA) and Jennifer Fite – Data Strategy and Data Information Architect (Bank of America).

Oct. 29 (Wed) – SAISD Foundation 14th annual Inspire Awards

Now in its 14th year, the SAISD Foundation will host its annual Inspire Awards to honor four distinguished San Antonio ISD alumni. This year’s honorees include:

• Richard Acosta, Franchise Owner, Acosta Family McDonald’s (Brackenridge High School)

• Walter M. Embrey, Jr., Founder and Chairman, EMBREY (Jefferson High School)

• Janie Martinez Gonzalez, Founder and CEO of Webhead (Burbank High School)

• Baltazar “Walter” Serna, Partner, Serna & Serna Attorneys at Law (Edison High School)

Oct 30 (Thurs) – SAISD Gifted & Talented Inaugural Cardboard Boat Regatta
11 a.m. to 2 p.m., San Antonio Natatorium, 1430 W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd., 78207
The Cardboard Regatta is a one-day engineering design challenge where gifted and talented students will work in teams to design, build, and race a boat using only cardboard, trash bags, and duct tape. Eleventh grade G/T students from campuses across the district will represent their schools in this exciting challenge. Each team will showcase critical thinking, collaboration and creative problem solving in front of peers, staff, and administrators.
