Earth Day Week initiative will help SAISD elementary schools start or expand student-led recycling efforts

SAN ANTONIO (April 22, 2026) — In conjunction with Earth Day Week (April 19–25, 2026), San Antonio-based Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions and the SAISD Foundation have launched a new grant program aimed at helping San Antonio ISD elementary schools start, grow or revive student-led recycling clubs.

The SAISD Elementary School Recycling Club Grant Program is designed to give young students hands-on opportunities to learn about recycling, environmental responsibility and leadership while making a meaningful impact on their campuses. The program is open to SAISD elementary schools interested in launching a new recycling club or expanding an existing one during the 2026–2027 school year.

Each selected school will receive:
• An 8’ x 10’ trailer for collecting aluminum cans;
• Support from Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions, including campus visits to talk with students about the importance of recycling, including metal recycling and its impact on the community; and
• $500 for club supplies.

“Teaching children about recycling at a young age helps them understand not only what recycling is, but why it matters,” said Jordan Vexler, CEO of Monterrey Metal Recycling Solutions. “We want students to see that they can take simple actions that make a real difference for their school, their community and the environment.”

By launching the initiative during Earth Day Week, Monterrey Metal and the SAISD Foundation hope to reinforce a timely message: recycling is not just a one-day conversation. It is an everyday habit that helps conserve resources, reduce waste, and build a more sustainable future.

The grant program also provides schools with a practical way to engage students in environmental stewardship while encouraging teamwork, responsibility and campus pride.
