As part of Teacher Appreciation Week, San Antonio ISD recognized its Teachers of the Year. Seventy-nine teachers were honored May 7 at the Alamo Convocation Center.
The Teacher of the Year award honors teachers who have been in the profession for at least three years and who excel in academic success, school leadership, and service to the school community. Each school’s Teacher of the Year was selected by a vote of his or her peers. Honorees received a certificate, personalized glass trophy, and a yard sign to place in their front yards.
At the event, the district's Distinguished Teachers of the Year were also named. Lucel Gaspan-Frost from Beacon Hill Primary is the Distinguished Teacher of the Year for elementary grades, Sarah Carrola from Whittier Middle School is the Distinguished Teacher of the Year for middle school grades and Willie Garza from Fox Tech High School is the Distinguished Teacher of the Year for high school grades. Additionally, Jennifer Soto was named Campus Leader of the Year for all she has accomplished at Green Elementary at Riverside Park.

Como parte de la Semana de Agradecimiento a los Maestros, San Antonio ISD reconoció a sus Maestros del Año. El 7 de mayo setenta y nueve maestros fueron homenajeados en el Alamo Convocation Center.
El premio del Maestro del Año distingue a los maestros que llevan al menos tres años en la profesión y que destacan por su éxito académico, el liderazgo escolar y el servicio a la comunidad escolar. La Maestra o el Maestro del Año de cada escuela son seleccionados por votación de sus colegas. Los homenajeados recibieron un certificado, un trofeo de vidrio personalizado y un letrero de jardín para colocarlo en sus patios.

“I live for the lightbulb moments when students feel empowered and learn to persevere through academic and life lessons, especially the more challenging ones.
“Personally, I know that while intellect can define many opportunities, I believe emotional intelligence and self-efficacy help students to make long-term progress and persist through each stage they encounter. That is why I always tell my students that if there is anything I would like them to remember about our time together, that is the confidence they found in my class and the ability to remind themselves that ‘I can do hard things’ wherever life takes them.
“I need to make my students understand that I love them enough to make sure they know how to learn from their mistakes and how to push forth instead of shying away in face of failure or adversity.”

“The best part of teaching is hearing my students' stories, learning about their traditions, and hearing how they would solve problems facing our community. I have been lucky enough to have taught both reading and social studies in my teaching career. I try to make my class different by giving my students opportunities to share their stories, their ideas, and their experiences with our class and the outside world.
“I want my students to keep their family's traditions alive by sharing their stories. Looking back, I was not given those types of opportunities as a young student. Now, I wonder if my life would have been different if I was allowed to share my opinions, to share my stories with others in school. My confidence would have been sky high. That's what I want for my students. I want them to be proud of who they are, advocate for themselves, and advocate for their families.”

“My classroom is built around student ownership. In this way I can create a space for my scholars to drive conversations, own their learning goals, and think deeply about how they're progressing. I'm there as a teacher/facilitator.
“My role is to establish predictable structures and offer feedback that's timely and actionable—so they know exactly what they're doing well and where to focus next. Learning in my room is a partnership. Students lead our talks, chart their own course, and own their progress. I'm committed to building clear, predictable routines and giving feedback that actually helps them grow. For example, student scholars drive the conversations and debates. You set own your goals, tackle real challenges, and see your wins as you grow. Through project-based learning, you're not just studying Supreme Court cases—you're analyzing primary sources, using tech to dig deeper, and building the critical thinking skills you'll need beyond high school.”

When she walks into a room, the energy shifts — not because she is loud, but because she is intentional. She has a vision, a plan, and absolutely no problem letting you know when you've gone off script. But when she does, she does it with such grace and warmth that somehow you leave the conversation feeling motivated, not scolded.
She is always thinking steps ahead, foreseeing what needs to be done before anyone else sees it coming. Every move she makes is purposeful. Every decision is rooted in something deeper: a genuine belief that every child in this building deserves excellence, and she refuses to settle for anything less.
