Laura Sisson, digital teacher librarian at the Advanced Learning Academy, has been awarded a 2026 Trinity Prize for Excellence in Teaching.

Sisson and 15 other distinguished educators nominated by area school districts received the prize during a ceremony on May 8 at the Trinity University campus.

“Being a Trinity Prize recipient is incredibly humbling,” Sisson said. “Librarians are teachers at heart, and it is wonderful to see that remembered as the center of our work. I am so grateful for all the wonderful leaders, librarians, and teachers who have mentored me along the way. I have been fortunate to have been a part of wonderful school communities where my coworkers, students, and parents felt like family. And I am eternally proud to have generations of teachers and librarians behind me who have made this profession one of honor and dignity.”

According to the Trinity University website, the Trinity Prize is greater San Antonio area’s oldest and most prestigious teaching award, launched in 1982 to honor public school teachers who distinguish their teaching practice through outstanding classroom performance, leadership in the school and school district, contributions to the education profession, and stellar community service.

Growing up in a family of educators, Sisson first visited San Antonio on a trip with Notre Dame of Maryland University, where she studied education and liberal arts. She fell in love with the area and started teaching here, quickly making her way over to SAISD.

“Nearly my entire career has been in SAISD,” Sisson said. “I have been inspired over and over again by the rich, vibrant community here and have met the best students, families, coworkers, and administration who have pushed me throughout my entire career.”

Sisson, San Antonio ISD’s 2025 High School Distinguished Teacher of the Year, is in her 25th year of teaching and her 23rd year in San Antonio ISD, with the last 10 taking place in her current role at ALA. She previously served as a librarian at Woodlawn Academy, Woodlawn Hills Elementary, and Green Elementary, after starting her district career teaching at Woodlawn Academy.

"When I transferred to the library, I left the classroom with a lot of hesitation,” Sisson said. “But from the library position, I could work with all the teachers and keep my connection to the students. It was a natural fit for me as I became a teacher for the entire campus. I never stopped being a teacher; I just moved to the largest classroom and took on the role of teaching everyone on campus.”

One of the areas that has allowed Sisson to grow in this role came when a student asked for her help starting a yearbook for ALA. Sisson manages the library at the Fox Tech campus where ALA resides, and currently maintains a collection of numerous old yearbooks and artifacts for the school, which was built at that location in 1882.

"She offered to help create the yearbook if I could sponsor it,” Sisson said. “I agreed with some fear as it wasn’t something I had any experience with, but I am so glad I agreed because it became a pivotal moment in my career.”

The school now has a thriving journalism program with a class of 35 students that produce the yearbook as well as an award-winning student-run newspaper.

Sisson has also used her position and love of teaching to assist faculty and families with technology, delivering professional development (PD) on using technology in the classroom and at home, a task that grew exponentially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“During COVID, I delivered more PD than ever and added parents to my list of students, navigating many families through the changing technology,” she said.

It’s part of what makes the job the best of both worlds for her.

“Through it all, I have never stopped being a teacher first,” Sisson said. “I absolutely love my job. I always try to keep the focus on the students and what is best for them. My job is to serve the students and families here. I want them to succeed and that is enough reward for me."

The Trinity Prize does come with a few other perks, though.

At the ceremony, Sisson received a glass apple as a gift from the university and a Bexar County commendation from Judge Peter Sakai. From sponsor Whataburger, awardees received a $1,000 cash prize, a $300 Amazon gift card to use for classroom supplies, and a $350 Amazon gift card for a student organization or effort of their selection at their school or in the community that supports inclusion in education. Finally, they received a Whataburger gift box with branded gifts, including Whataburger for a year.

Bibliotecario de ALA gana el Premio Trinity a la Excelencia

Laura Sisson, docente bibliotecaria digital de Advanced Learning Academy, ha sido galardonada con el Premio Trinity 2026 a la Excelencia en la Enseñanza.

González y otros 15 educadores distinguidos nominados por los distritos escolares del área recibieron el premio durante una ceremonia el 8 de mayo en el campus de Trinity University.

“Ser una ganadora del Premio Trinity es increíblemente humilde”, dijo Sisson. “Los bibliotecarios son maestros de corazón, y es maravilloso ver que eso es recordado como el centro de nuestro trabajo. De acuerdo con el sitio web de Trinity University, el Trinity Prize es el premio más antiguo y prestigioso de enseñanza en todo San Antonio, y fue fundado en 1982 para distinguir a maestros de escuelas públicas quienes destacan su práctica de la enseñanza por medio de excelente rendimiento en el salón de clases, liderazgo en la escuela y en el distrito escolar, contribuciones a la profesión de educación y servicio comunitario espectacular.

Creciendo en una familia de educadores, Sisson visitó por primera vez San Antonio en un viaje con Notre Dame de la Universidad de Maryland, donde estudió educación y artes liberales Ella se enamoró de la zona y comenzó a enseñar aquí, rápidamente haciendo su camino hacia SAISD.

“Casi toda mi carrera ha sido en SAISD”, dijo Sisson. “Me he inspirado una y otra vez la rica y vibrante comunidad aquí y he conocido a los mejores estudiantes, familias, compañeros de trabajo y administración que me han empujado a lo largo de toda mi carrera”.

Sisson, la Maestra Distinguida del Año de preparatoria 2025 de San Antonio ISD, está en su 25° año de enseñanza y su 23° año en San Antonio ISD, con los últimos 10 teniendo lugar en su rol actual en ALA. Anteriormente se desempeñó como bibliotecaria en Woodlawn Academy, Woodlawn Hills Elementary y Green Elementary, después de comenzar su carrera en el distrito enseñando en Woodlawn Academy.

"Cuando me trasladé a la biblioteca, dejé mis clases después de pensarlo mucho" —dijo Sisson. Pero desde el puesto de bibliotecaria, podía trabajar con todos los profesores y mantener mi conexión con los alumnos. Fue algo natural para mí, ya que me convertí en profesora de todo el campus. Nunca dejé de ser maestra; me mudé al aula más grande y asumí el papel de enseñar a todos en el campus."

Una de las áreas que le ha permitido a Sisson crecer en este rol fue cuando una estudiante pidió su ayuda para comenzar un anuario para ALA. Sisson administra la biblioteca en el campus Fox Tech donde ALA reside, y actualmente mantiene una colección de numerosos anuarios y artefactos antiguos para la escuela, que fue construida en ese lugar en 1882.

"Ella se ofreció a ayudar a crear el anuario si yo podía patrocinarlo", dijo Sisson. “Estuve de acuerdo con un poco de miedo, ya que no era algo con lo que tenía experiencia, pero estoy muy contenta de estar de acuerdo porque se convirtió en un momento crucial en mi carrera”.

La escuela ahora tiene un próspero programa de periodismo con una clase de 35 estudiantes que producen el anuario, así como un galardonado periódico dirigido por estudiantes.

Sisson también ha utilizado su posición y amor por la enseñanza para ayudar a profesores y familias con la tecnología, ofreciendo desarrollo profesional (PD) en el uso de la tecnología en el aula y en el hogar, una tarea que creció exponencialmente durante la pandemia de COVID-19.

“Durante COVID, entregué más PD que nunca y añadí a los padres a mi lista de estudiantes, navegando a muchas familias a través de la tecnología cambiante”, dijo.

Es parte de lo que hace que el trabajo sea el mejor de ambos mundos para ella.

"A pesar de todo, nunca he dejado de ser, ante todo, maestra", afirmó Sisson. "Realmente me encanta mi trabajo. Siempre trato de mantener el enfoque en los estudiantes y lo que es mejor para ellos. Mi trabajo es servir a los estudiantes y familias aquí. Quiero que tengan éxito y eso es para mí suficiente gratificación."

El Premio Trinity tiene, además, otras ventajas.

En la ceremonia, Sisson recibió una manzana de vidrio como regalo de la universidad y un elogio del condado de Bexar del juez Peter Sakai. Los galardonados recibieron del patrocinador Whataburger un premio de 1000 dólares en efectivo, una tarjeta regalo de Amazon por valor de 300 dólares para material escolar y otra tarjeta regalo de Amazon por valor de 350 dólares destinada a una organización estudiantil o a una iniciativa de su elección, ya sea en su centro educativo o en la comunidad, que promueva la inclusión en la educación. Por último, recibieron una caja de regalo de Whataburger con artículos promocionales de la marca, entre los que se incluía comida de Whataburger para todo un año.
