July 20, 2026 – The San Antonio ISD Board of Trustees voted tonight to confirm Dr. Adrian Bustillos as SAISD Superintendent of Schools during a regularly scheduled board meeting. Last month, on June 24, the trustees named Dr. Bustillos the lone finalist, and state law requires a 21-day waiting period before superintendent finalists can officially be hired.
“We proudly selected Dr. Bustillos for his ability to lead transformational change and deliver innovative educational opportunities in districts similar to ours,” said Board President Alicia Sebastian. “We are impressed with his reputation as a visionary and collaborative leader who brings people together around a shared mission of educating students, and we are excited to introduce him to our SAISD familia.”
“My vision is to create a future where every student feels valued, challenged, and inspired, and where innovative learning opportunities, strong community partnerships, and a culture of belonging prepare all students for success in college, career, and life,” said Bustillos. “Together, we will build on our strengths, embrace new possibilities, and ensure that every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential. I am excited to begin this journey alongside you."
Dr. Bustillos’ career spans 20 years, beginning as a science teacher and progressing to leadership roles.
Since October 2019, Bustillos has served as the Chief Transformation Officer for Aldine ISD, where he has set the vision and direction for innovative school models to enhance student outcomes. Like SAISD, Aldine ISD offers models including single-gender, dual language, Montessori, International Baccalaureate, health science, early college high schools, and P-TECH options. In addition to these offerings, Bustillos also has overseen college, career and military readiness (CCMR); career and technical education (CTE); advanced academics; online learning; visual and performing arts; and new learning models such as newcomer schools.
Before joining Aldine ISD, Bustillos was the Executive Director of the Office of Transformation for El Paso ISD, where he began his career in 2006. He served the district as a science teacher, science facilitator, assistant principal, and high school facilitator before launching the Office of Transformation.
Bustillos has a strong foundation in curriculum development, instructional coaching, and school improvement. He has participated in nationally recognized programs and fellowships such as the MIT School Access & Quality Fellowship, Rice University’s Business Certificate in Executive Education Leadership, and The Holdsworth Center’s Aspiring Superintendent Leadership Program.
Bustillos holds a bachelor’s degree in biological science from the University of Texas-El Paso and a master’s in school leadership. He received his doctorate in curriculum and instruction from New Mexico State University.
Sebastian, on behalf of the Board of Trustees, shared her excitement for the future and Bustillos’ leadership.

The SAISD Board conducted a comprehensive search process in selecting Bustillos, which included researching his leadership, character, track record, and ability to drive meaningful results.

With tonight’s confirmation, Bustillos will start his duties as superintendent as the school year begins in August.
