“We're doing the High 5 [classroom standards],
and I think that is good for a new teacher coming in.
It’s an expectation across all campuses.
And right now, that is essential.
So it is a great opportunity to happen to come into the district at this moment.”
~ Veronica Saenz
This year is a homecoming for Veronica Saenz. The veteran educator who grew up on the West side and attended Ruiz Elementary is now helping students read on the same land that served as her elementary home.
“This is where I feel I'm meant to be,” said Saenz, the Barkley-Ruiz dyslexia teacher. “Because this is where I started as a little girl.”
After attending Ruiz Elementary and Cooper Middle School, Saenz graduated from Lanier High School and UT San Antonio and immediately returned to San Antonio ISD to teach, spending two decades at Gates Elementary teaching first grade and kindergarten.
“I've always been in the district,” she said. “SAISD has also helped me grow as a teacher.”
During her tenure, she has taken advantage of district-sponsored programs that allowed her to continue her education, earning master’s degrees through partnerships offered at the time with Texas A&M-San Antonio and the University of Texas at Austin. She saw Gates through its merger with M.L. King Academy, teaching there two years and coaching cross country, before she knew it was time to grow again. She earned her special education certification as well, and now, equipped with multiple credentials, Saenz chose to specialize in helping students read.
“I tell the kids all the time, we have to read everywhere,” she said. “That alone sets up a kid's future and helps them expand their knowledge and grow.”
A former Leaders Readers Network fellow with two decades of experience teaching the foundations of reading and utilizing small group instruction, Saenz is now enjoying using her skills with primary grades as well as with older students.
“I love it when the kids’ light bulbs turn on,” she said. “Seeing them already just grasping the knowledge, the sounds, and blending the words, and then going back and then practicing what they know into the classroom, they're so excited with that. They’ll say ‘Miss, I’m reading, I'm reading a word. I'm reading two words. Can you tell my teacher?’ Even the older grades, they're still so excited to want to learn to read.”
Having seen a lot of change over two decades in public education in SAISD, Saenz has a bit of advice for newer educators: keep going even if it’s difficult and take advantage of the resources the district is providing to teachers.
“It’s good to come in and use the best practices that they're having us do,” Saenz said. “We're doing the High 5 [classroom standards], and I think that is good for a new teacher coming in. And it’s an expectation across all campuses. And right now, that is essential. So it is a great opportunity to happen to come into the district at this moment.”
