May 2023 Update

Project Implementation

HVAC Replacements

  • Two more schools received mechanical upgrades with HVAC equipment replacement: Estrada Academy and Foster Elementary. Ten schools moved from the category of “Contract Negotiations” to “Scheduled Completion” for HVAC upgrades in August. The remaining 10 campuses to receive the replacements are in various stages of the scheduling or procurement process.

Major Renovations

  • Three more schools moved out of the design process and are readying for the start of construction: Edison High School, Graebner Elementary and Sam Houston High School. A total of 10 schools are currently in the construction phase.
  • JT Brackenridge Elementary’s flagpole plaza, obstacle course and outdoor basketball court have been completed and are open for use.
  • The rental of temporary classrooms for additional space was approved in April for Longfellow Middle School and Steele Academy.
  • Funding for sitework was approved for YWLA, to include the demolition of the tennis courts to prepare for the installation of new portables and the relocation of two portables, as well as earthwork and utilities at the track and field area.
  • The Board also approved funding in April to procure long lead-time items necessary to meet the planned construction schedule for Irving Dual Language Academy, including structural steel, mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • The Schematic Design for Jefferson High School was approved in April. With this approval, this project moves into the Design Development phase of construction, which is a more complete and detailed level of design.

Technology Upgrades

  • Three more schools received upgraded infrastructure for improved Wi-Fi throughout the campus. This brings the total number of schools so far to receive the upgrade to 56. Eventually all campuses will have the upgrade.
  • The District began the procurement process in April for the purchase of classroom charging carts and devices for 15 schools. The delivery of upgraded core technology devices is a multi-year process, and ultimately all schools will receive them.

Enhanced website

  • A new Bond 2020 website was launched in late April, which includes details on the status and progress of each of the bond projects. It can be found at: www.saisd.net/bond2020

Citizens Advisory Committee

  • The 21 members of the Citizens Advisory Committee (CAC) hold meetings quarterly to inform and advise the Board in matters relating to Bond 2020. The next meeting is scheduled for May 11, 2023, from 6-8 p.m. in the Board Room.
