CITIZENS ADVISORY COMMITEE DOCUMENTS

September 15, 2020
The Citizens Advisory Committee held a regularly occurring meeting to discuss the ongoing Bond 2016 projects and learn about updates and issues concerning the $450 million program. The meeting was held via Zoom to practice safe, social distancing due to the current COVID-19 pandemic.

November 5, 2019: Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting

The Citizens Advisory Committee convened at Bowden Academy, one of the first of the Bond 2016 projects to begin completion. The committee learned updates on all of the Bond projects during their quarterly meeting, and then took a walking tour to see the completed classrooms at Bowden. The $11 million project includes the addition of windows throughout the building, new classroom spaces in a 13,700 square foot addition, renovations to the kitchen and cafeteria, a new front entry with added features to improve security, infrastructure overhauls and more. Bowden is expected to be completed in early 2020.

August 5, 2019: Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting

The Citizens Advisory Committee met to discuss the $450 million Bond program well underway at SAISD. Superintendent Pedro Martinez joined the group and emphasized the importance of the current Bond, and that future potential Bonds will raise the standard of the District’s facilities to the level of education being provided. The committee heard from Kedrick Wright, director of planning and construction, on the progress of the major work done over the summer and what the next few months will look like for the 13 projects.

February 26, 2019: Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting
The Citizens Advisory Committee convened to hear project updates for each of the 13 Bond projects, including status of the guaranteed maximum price (GMP) which is approved by the SAISD Trustees as they are available. The projects then begin the construction phase once the GMP is approved.

October 23, 2018: Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting
For the first time as a group, members of the CAC had the chance to see the schematic designs of the Bond 2016 projects. Kedrick Wright, director of planning and construction, updated the members on the status of the projects and walked through each project scope. He answered questions about the construction phases, timing and unique aspects pertaining to each campus.

July 18, 2018: Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting
The Citizens Advisory Committee met July 18, 2018 to discuss the Bond 2016 projects. At this meeting, the committee heard updates on Bowden Academy, Burbank High School and Rogers Middle School. They also were briefed on contractor selection, the Bond master schedule, and recent Project Advisory Team (PAT) meetings.

March 28, 2018: Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting
SAISD’s Bond 2016 Citizens Advisory Committee met on March 28 and heard from SAISD Chief Operations Officer Willie Burroughs, as well as SAISD Board of Trustees president Patti Radle. During the presentation, Kedrick Wright, director of planning and construction, briefed the committee on details on some of the projects. Members asked specific questions regarding the design and plans of projects that lie within their individual districts.

December 6, 2017: Citizen Advisory Committee Meeting
On Wednesday, SAISD’s Bond 2016 Citizens Advisory Committee heard from Associate Superintendent for Facilities Planning and Construction, Kamal ElHabr, updating members on the status of the Bond timeline, as well as architecture and engineering firms selected to work on the 13 projects. In addition, Kedrick Wright, who serves as the director for planning and construction, provided information on the District’s Master Plan: 2030, where a demographic study, facility condition assessment, and educational suitability assessment, is being conducted to strive for the best in modern education. Chief Operating Officer Willie Burroughs addressed the committee to outline the various moving parts of the Bond 2016 program.

September 13, 2017: Citizens Advisory Committee Meeting
Kamal ElHabr, Associate Superintendent Facilities Planning & Construction, covered the selection process and details about the projects. Several of the committee members raised questions about the inclusion of small business and minority participation. Also discussed was the staffing process, including both internal and external support. Committee members were briefed on the RFQ process and the Bond 2016 timeline.

June 14, 2017: First Bond 2016 Citizens Advisory Committee Meeting
The Citizens Advisory Committee, comprised of members of the community nominated by all SAISD School Board Trustees and the Superintendent, met for the first time to go over the purpose of the body and hear from Kamal ElHabr, Associate Superintendent Facilities Planning & Construction, about the scope of each project.
