Small groups of students and teachers braved the cold weather Monday morning to get the chance for some hands-on learning, creative innovation and social-emotional nurturing. 

This week, Jan. 3-7, was an Intercession Week in San Antonio ISD, a time set aside to accelerate the rate of learning for students and reduce the likelihood of compounding knowledge gaps, providing time for intervention and enrichment.

Each campus had the opportunity to plan the activities that were best for their students’ needs, and SAISD schools did not disappoint. 

At Poe Middle School, 13 teachers and nearly 80 students came in each day, engaging in fun hands-on activities and teaching and learning different content from their day-to-day routines.

“Our campus goals are to keep students connected to our house of teaching and learning through choice in the sessions they attend while teachers get a chance to teach a skill they may not normally teach during the traditional school year,” Principal Christine Perez said. 

Poe offered students the chance to choose the activities that interested them most, from options including coding video games, learning to cook, and working in the Innovation Lab to design and create pencil pouches, games, fidget toys, earrings, hoodies and more using tools like the Cricut, Dremel and Glowforge 3D printer. 

English teacher Beverley Flores led the cooking classes. 

“Getting to share another passion of mine with our students has been a great experience,” Flores said. “All students that have come through our baking session have been highly engaged and have enjoyed the opportunity to learn their way around the kitchen. They've been combining math and reading skills to work their way through each recipe.”

At De Zavala Elementary, seven teachers and more than 50 students are brushing up on math, reading, and science through a lens of space. Students are integrating STEM as they learn about the solar system and constellations and solve problems creatively.

“We make it as fun as we can, integrating a lot of hands-on experience while providing the math and reading intervention that our kids need,” Principal Donna Finch said. 

At Lamar Elementary, the week started off with seven teachers and nearly 100 students, as they built their instructional focus around literacy. Students rotated through 45-minute stations, including the interactive Curiosity Corner, led by Sarita Rodriguez. 

In the Curiosity Corner, third and fourth grade students built different shapes using Tangrams, integrating cultural learning, literature, and skills in geometry.

“They’re learning angles, math, reflection, and translation,” Rodriguez said. “We are scaffolding for geometry in the fourth grade.”

At Lowell Middle School, the campus took a holistic approach. 

“With all that is going on in our world right now and in the two weeks our students were out of school, we wanted to provide a safe welcome back to school with real-world applications of reading and math and social emotional learning activities to support their well-being,” Principal Yvonne Hernandez said. 

Their schedule included morning meditation, reading, math, healthy eating, gardening, goal setting, and fitness. 

Though each campus had their own spin on their week of learning and fun, the benefits to their students and teachers were similar. 

"Intercession has allowed teachers and students to ease back into school,” Cynthia Baez, a special education teacher at Poe, said. “This week has been energizing and inspirational for all the participants. It is helpful to have time and space to practice what is at the heart of teaching: innovation, creativity, and reflection.”

El receso académico les ofrece oportunidades creativas a los estudiantes

Grupos pequeños de estudiantes y maestros afrontaron las temperaturas frías el lunes por la mañana para participar del aprendizaje práctico, la innovación creativa y del enriquecimiento socioemocional. 

Esta semana, del 3-7 de ene., fue una Semana de Receso Académico en San Antonio ISD reservada para acelerar la tasa de aprendizaje de los estudiantes y reducir la posibilidad de agravar las brechas de conocimiento al proporcionar tiempo para intervención y enriquecimiento.

Cada escuela tuvo la oportunidad de planificar las actividades que más se ajustaban a las necesidades de sus estudiantes, y las escuelas de SAISD hicieron un excelente trabajo. 

En Poe Middle School, 13 maestros y casi 80 estudiantes asistieron cada día y participaron en actividades prácticas divertidas mientras enseñaron y aprendieron contenido diferente al de sus rutinas cotidianas.

“Las metas de nuestra escuela son mantener a los estudiantes conectados a nuestro centro de enseñanza y aprendizaje a través de las opciones en las sesiones a las que asisten, mientras los maestros tienen la oportunidad de enseñar una habilidad que tal vez no enseñan normalmente durante el año escolar tradicional”, dijo la Directora Christine Perez. 

Poe les ofreció a los estudiantes la oportunidad de elegir las actividades que les interesaban más, con opciones como codificar videojuegos, aprender a cocinar y trabajar en el Laboratorio de Innovación para diseñar y crear estuches de lápices, juegos, juguetes sensoriales, aretes, sudaderas y más usando herramientas como Cricut, Dremel y la impresora Glowforge 3D. 

La maestra de inglés, Beverly Flores, dirigió las clases de cocina. 

“El poder compartir otra de mis pasiones con nuestros estudiantes ha sido una experiencia genial”, dijo Flores. “Todos los estudiantes que han venido a nuestra sesión de cocina han participado y disfrutado de la oportunidad de aprender elementos básicos de cocina. Han combinado sus habilidades de matemáticas y de lectura para trabajar con cada receta”.

En De Zavala Elementary, siete maestros y más de 50 estudiantes están repasando las materias de matemáticas, lectura y ciencias desde una perspectiva del espacio. Los estudiantes están integrando STEM a medida que aprenden sobre el sistema solar y las constelaciones y resuelven problemas de forma creativa.

“Lo hacemos lo más divertido que podemos, integrando mucha experiencia práctica mientras proporcionamos la intervención de matemáticas y lectura que nuestros niños necesitan”, dijo la Directora Donna Finch. 

En Lamar Elementary, la semana comenzó con siete maestros y casi 100 estudiantes, quienes desarrollaron su enfoque de instrucción en base a la alfabetización. Los estudiantes se rotaban entre estaciones por 45 minutos, incluso el Rincón de Curiosidad interactivo, dirigido por Sarita Rodriguez. 

En el Rincón de Curiosidad, los estudiantes de tercer y cuarto grado construyeron diferentes formas usando el Tangram mientras integraban el aprendizaje cultural, la literatura y las habilidades de geometría.

“Están aprendiendo ángulos, matemáticas, reflexión y traducción”, dijo Rodriguez. “Estamos creando andamios para la geometría en cuarto grado”.

En Lowell Middle School, la escuela tuvo un enfoque holístico. 

“Con todo lo que está sucediendo en el mundo ahorita y durante las dos semanas que nuestros estudiantes no tuvieron clases, queríamos ofrecer una bienvenida de regreso a clases con actividades de lectura, matemáticas y aprendizaje socioemocional que tenían aplicaciones al mundo real para apoyar su bienestar”, dijo la directora Yvonne Hernandez. 

Su horario incluyó meditación por la mañana, lectura, matemáticas, comida saludable, jardinería, establecimiento de metas y ejercicio. 

A pesar de que cada escuela tuvo su propio enfoque para la semana de aprendizaje y diversión, los beneficios para sus estudiantes y maestros fueron parecidos. 

"El receso académico les ha permitido a los maestros y estudiantes facilitar su regreso a la escuela”, dijo Cynthia Baez, una maestra de educación especial en Poe. “Esta semana ha sido energizante e inspiradora para todos los participantes. Es útil tener tiempo y espacio para practicar los elementos fundamentales de la enseñanza: innovación, creatividad y reflexión”.
