"We're here because of porch pirates."
That's the perspective Leah Hernandez, a ninth-grade student at St. Philip's Early College High School, held as 71 first graders at Briscoe Elementary had the chance to build with brand new Lego kits — kits that were donated after Hernandez was a victim of package theft in December.
It was no ordinary package that was stolen. It was a birthday gift, a special Lego set for the passionate future engineer, that was taken from her front porch. Hernandez and her family were heartbroken, but decided to use the loss to give back to the community.
“Maybe the Legos went to someone who really needed them or wanted them more, but so much good came out of the bad,” she said.
Hernandez, who wants to be an aerospace engineer, first had her passion for STEM ignited by building Legos and robots when she was in elementary school. She had started fundraising last fall through the SAISD Foundation to purchase Lego and robotics kits for first graders in the district.
“The whole point is to give opportunities to kids who don’t have access to stuff like this – robot kits, Lego sets, any type of STEM-related activities – so they can discover and find out what they want to do,” she said.
When her birthday gift went missing, she saw it as an opportunity to raise awareness not only about package safety, but also about the inspiration she hopes to bring to other budding engineers.

The donations came flooding in. San Antonio Police Department Central Substation SAFFE Unit began collecting for her.
“Hearing what Leah wants to do is so encouraging,” Officer J. Hernandez said. “We believe in her and want to give back within our district and help students to learn to pursue their passion.”
Leah also received more than 300 Lego kits from the San Antonio Diaper Bank and the American Indians of Texas during the holiday season, all of which led to the event at Briscoe.
She and seven classmates from St. Philip’s Early College High School distributed the kits Feb 1. and helped the young engineers build them. With the support of their school, they had matching t-shirts and bus transportation to the event.
It was a morning of joy as parents, staff, the student volunteers and volunteers from both San Antonio Police Department and SAISD Police Department helped the first graders build their Knockdown Stunt Challenge kits from the Lego Stuntz collection.
Now, looking to the future, with the generosity of her donors, Leah has more school visits on the horizon.
“I’m a lot overwhelmed,” Leah said. “It’s exciting to know that people enjoy taking part in this. I didn’t expect it to get this big.”

"Estamos aquí por culpa de los piratas del porche".
Esa es la perspectiva de Leah Hernández, una estudiante de noveno grado en St Philip’s Early College High School, que se llevó a cabo cuando 71 estudiantes de primer grado en Briscoe Elementary, tuvieron la oportunidad de construir con nuevos kits de Lego, kits que fueron donados después de que en diciembre a Hernández le robaran un paquete de su porche.
No fue un paquete ordinario el que fue robado. Era un regalo de cumpleaños, un juego especial de Lego para la apasionada futura ingeniera, que fue tomado del porche de su casa. Hernández y su familia estaban desconsolados, pero decidieron usar la pérdida para retribuir a la comunidad.
"Tal vez los Legos fueron a parar a alguien que realmente los necesitaba o los quería más, pero de lo malo salieron muchas cosas buenas", dijo.
Hernández, que quiere ser ingeniera aeroespacial, sintió por primera vez su pasión por STEM construyendo Legos y robots cuando estaba en la escuela primaria. El otoño pasado había comenzado a recaudar fondos a través de la Fundación SAISD para comprar Lego y kits de robótica para los niños de primer grado del distrito.
“El objetivo es brindar oportunidades a los niños que no tienen acceso a estas cosas (kits de robots, juegos de Lego, cualquier tipo de actividades relacionadas con STEM) para que puedan explorar y descubrir lo que quieren hacer”, dijo.
Cuando su regalo de cumpleaños desapareció, lo vio como una oportunidad para crear conciencia no solo sobre la seguridad de los paquetes, sino también sobre la inspiración que espera brindar a otros ingenieros en ciernes.

Llegaron muchas donaciones. La Unidad SAFFE de la Subestación Central del Departamento de Policía de San Antonio comenzó a recolectar para ella.
"Escuchar lo que Leah quiere hacer es muy alentador", dijo el oficial J. Hernández. "Creemos en ella y queremos retribuir dentro de nuestro distrito y ayudar a los estudiantes a aprender a seguir su pasión".
Leah también recibió más de 300 kits de Lego del Banco de Pañales de San Antonio y de los Indios Americanos de Texas durante la temporada navideña, todo lo cual condujo al evento en Briscoe.
Ella y siete compañeros de clase de St. Philip's Early College High School distribuyeron los kits el 1 de febrero y ayudaron a los jóvenes ingenieros a construirlos. Con el apoyo de su escuela, tenían camisetas a juego y transporte en autobús al evento.
