On June 23, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) released further guidance for reopening schools in the fall.  Based on the guidance, SAISD is comfortable that it can implement the academic models it has been discussing with staff and parents. The District has the flexibility to provide fully remote learning, for those parents who want that, as well as a hybrid approach (face-to-face and online instruction). SAISD also is looking at certain groups of students who could come to campus every day – and those plans will be developed and customized by each school.

The District will continue to gather input from teachers, parents and students as we work to finalize plans, with a second survey going out June 25.

Additionally, the District adopted an extended calendar Monday night, which includes 15 intersession days as a contingency for COVID-19 outbreaks and to provide opportunities for make-up days for students who missed school or need additional academic support.  These days also could be full closures where no one is allowed to report.

SAISD has a comprehensive effort well underway to prepare for the start of a new school year, making critical decisions about what school will look like and how SAISD students will experience learning. The District is doing this work collaboratively, with a priority on the health and safety of students and employees, and the delivery of high-quality educational experiences for all students. SAISD’s planning includes the consideration of many complexities of daily school operations, academics, school safety protocols, student transportation, meal service, and much more, to ensure safe environments for everyone.

Protocols are being developed within a framework of hygiene, physical distancing and other public health considerations, with the guidance of the Centers for Disease Control, and the City of San Antonio, and the Metropolitan Health District.
