Feb. 3 (Sat) – Jefferson High School Lassos participate in Western Heritage Parade & Cattle Drive
10 a.m., Downtown San Antonio, Houston St., 78207

The Jefferson High School Lassos will help usher in rodeo season by participating in the annual Western Heritage Parade & Cattle Drive. The Lassos will gather at Miliam Park at 10:10 a.m. before marching in the parade that features a cattle drive, mounted infantry groups and authentic wagons. The parade begins at the staging area at I-35 and Houston Street in downtown San Antonio and ends on Avenue E by the Alamo.
 
Feb. 3 (Sat) – Brackenridge High School BBQ team to compete in Rodeo Jr. Vaquero Cookoff
10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Market Square, 504 W. Commerce St., 78207

The Brackenridge High School BBQ team will put their culinary skills to the test at the San Antonio Rodeo’s Jr. Vaquero Cookoff. The event at the Market Square features high school teams of 2-5 students preparing three meals: fideo loco (Noon turn in time), charro beans (4 p.m. turn in) and a “Cook’s Choice” (2 p.m. turn in). Awards are presented at 6 p.m.
 
Feb. 5-8 (Mon - Thurs) – SAISD Black History Month Museum Bus Tour
The SAISD Transportation department has transformed the interior of a school bus into a museum on wheels. The Black History Month Museum Bus will tour district campuses to teach students about the namesakes of many of our schools. Historical artifacts will be on display for students to explore.

Feb. 8 (Thurs) – Twain Dual Language Academy Lunar New Year Celebration
3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m., Twain Dual Language Academy, 2411 San Pedro Ave., 78212

Twain Dual Language Academy is set to ring in the Year of the Dragon at a fun Lunar New Year celebration. The campus art department has prepared colorful activities for families to enjoy. Student dance performances provide the entertainment. Food concessions are also available.

Feb. 8 (Thurs) – Hawthorne Academy Family Night at the DoSeum
5 p.m. to 7 p.m., The DoSeum, 2800 Broadway, 78209

Hawthorne is teaming up with the DoSeum to take math and science education on the road for a special evening. Dinner will be provided while the learning takes place with a scavenger hunt exploration for the entire family.
 
Feb. 8 (Thurs) – Belle Ortiz Music Building Dedication Ceremony
5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., Lanier High School, 1514 W. Cesar Chavez Ave., 78207

Belle Ortiz is called the “Godmother of Mariachi Music Education” for introducing mariachi into public schools across the city, state, and eventually the country. And it all started in San Antonio at Lanier High School back in 1970. To honor her pioneering the cultural genre into our schools, SAISD will host a dedication ceremony for the renaming of the music building at Lanier High School to the “Belle Ortiz Music Building.” The Ortiz family will be in attendance, and the evening will feature performances by the Lanier Mariachi Orgullo de San Antonio and the SAISD All-Star Mariachi. Ortiz was also the co-founder of Mariachi Campanas de America, who will also provide a special performance to highlight the event.
