Subject expert: National Energy Consumption Competition 
  
Expert: Aaron Stein, energy and sustainability director, is available for interviews. 
 
SAISD has increased its sustainability measures throughout the District over the last few years. Such efforts have included increased awareness about recycling and energy use. These efforts have trickled down to the campus level, getting students involved. This year, Poe Middle School students will compete nationally in a Renews Our Schools energy consumption contest Oct. 4-Nov. 12. 
 
Student Spotlight: What 9/11 Means to Me 
 
Students: Cadet Lt. Col. Iris Lumbreras and Cadet Cpt. Skye Lumbreras, 
12th and 11th graders at Jefferson High School 
 
Sisters Iris and Skye Lumbreras are upperclassman and JROTC cadets at Jefferson High School. Neither were not born before the 9/11 attacks, yet they feel a call to service and duty. Iris is a senior and hopes to receive a four-year ROTC scholarship; she wants to study nursing and to commission in the Nurse Corps in the Army. Skye is a junior and also wants to pursue a ROTC scholarship and study psychology. 
 
Interviews may coincide with the calendar item below, 9/11 20th Anniversary on Wed., Sept. 8 at the flagpole at Jefferson High School.

Sept. 7 (Tue) – Parents invited to learn warning signs of suicide

This Zoom information session is for parents or caretakers and will be offered by the SAISD licensed clinical social work team. Four out of five suicide deaths are preceded by warning signs. Parents and caretakers will learn to separate myths from facts in this session.

Sept. 8 (Wed) – Cadets honor 9/11 20th Anniversary 
8:30 a.m., Jefferson High School at the flagpole 

Jefferson High School students, staff, police and fire department members, and the community will gather at the flagpole in front of Jefferson High School to honor the victims of 9/11 and pay tribute to the heroes of that day. Student cadets and sisters Iris and Skye Lumbreras will be available for interviews about what the day means to them, and why they are called to serve. Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar will serve as this year’s guest speaker. 
 
Sept. 10 (Fri) – Student work displayed during Restored by Light 
6-11 p.m., Mission San Jose, 6701 San Jose Dr., 78214 

SAISD middle and high school visual arts students will have their work displayed on the mission façade for one-night-only during Mission San Jose’s popular event, Restored by Light. The show begins at dusk. Families can bring picnics and enjoy food truck snacks. Masks are required to enter this outdoor event. Images of student work are available upon request.
