To the Class of 2020:

It has been my pleasure to serve as your principal. You have grown a lot since your first day of ninth grade. Your time at St. Philip’s ECHS was filled with laughter, disappointments, challenges and now your reward; you graduate with college hours or a college degree as well as your high school diploma. This was not an easy task, and I am extremely proud of what you have accomplished.

We were ready to celebrate all that you have done with a variety of senior activities, then we were hit with a pandemic.  This could have been an excuse to give up, and rightly so, but you kept going for your goal and here we are today, you have made it.

I will have more to say to you during my graduation speech to the class of 2020 but until then, I would like to leave you with a quote from Shel Silverstein, “If the track is tough and the hill is rough, THINKING you can just ain’t enough!”– Where the Sidewalk Ends

Congratulations Seniors and thank you!

Dr. Derrick Thomas, Principal

Alondra Delgado

St. Philip’s Early College High School valedictorian Alondra Delgado isn’t letting the COVID-19 pandemic bring her down. If anything, the recent happenings have solidified her choice to study biology when she attends The University of Texas at San Antonio in the fall.

“With the COVID-19 crisis, I see we have the need for medical professionals,” she said. “Where some people might not want to be a medical professional now, I do even more. I want to be able to help, do something about it, not just sit here. I feel like this has pushed me more towards that area of study.”

Alondra, who has an affinity for math and has interned in an optometry clinic during her time at St. Philip’s, plans to become a pharmacist after graduating from college.

“The medical field interests me because you can get a personal connection with the patients,” she said. “You’re not just helping them, you are getting to know them at a deeper level. It’s not just about giving them a service, it is about physically giving them what they need, and also mentally as a person helping them get through a situation.”

Alondra will graduate from St. Philip’s with an associate degree in liberal arts and has been active on the early college high school campus as the president of the school’s National Honor Society, math tutor, and co-creator of the Media Club.

“I have always wanted to get a head in the game of life; I wanted to do things before others,” she said. “I mean, getting an associate [degree] before you graduate high school, that helps a lot, money-wise, but also with time, depending what you want to study. I am glad I ended up going to St. Philip’s.”

Alondra and her family moved to San Antonio when she was a sophomore, and it didn’t take her long to fall in love with the city and her school.

“I feel like San Antonio is my home now,” she said. “I was more introverted person when I was living in Brownsville; I didn’t talk to a lot of people. But everyone here is so outgoing. They got me to talk and now I am able to socialize I have opened up and trust and rely on people which was hard for me before. My friends here and the people in San Antonio are just nice in general. People here are more about forming connections.”

In addition to her academics and clubs at St. Philip’s, Alondra likes to paint in watercolor and play ukulele in her free time.
