Andrea will attend the University of the Incarnate Word to complete a bachelor of science in nursing. 

Why did you choose your pathway?

It’s always been my dream since I was a little girl. I just want to be able to help patients feel cared for and just be able to return to their best self.  

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome during your education?

My greatest challenge was learning English. Learning an entire new language as a child was pretty difficult and I always felt like I was on my own learning this language because no one in the family speaks it. I was able to overcome it by being placed in bilingual classes where the teacher also spoke Spanish and I was also in ESL for a really long time. As a child, I watched shows on PBS to help my vocabulary expand, so when I went to school I would understand things more.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

I think SAISD schools have shaped me because the teachers prepared me well, they challenged me, and they helped me overcome obstacles that got in the way. I think SAISD schools provided support not only to the students but to teachers and the families that positively impacts a student’s education. I would say overall, I think they provided a strong foundation for me that’s prepared me well for what’s coming next in my life.
