Monica will attend St. Philip's College to study culinary with an emphasis in pastry baking. She will minor in creative writing.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

I was really in SAISD in my younger years in second grade and fourth grade and it really taught me how to be strong and how to keep moving forward. My elementary school, Dorie Miller, was down the street from my house, so I used to walk there. When I went back, I had actually been in a wheelchair because I had broken my ankle and the staff there was so helpful and supportive. They really encouraged me to keep going to school because I didn’t want to at all. Here at Cooper, it’s the same. I didn’t think I’d be graduating and the teachers are just so amazing and so helpful.

As a leader of the class of 2023, what is your hope for the Class of 2023 as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

I think my biggest hope is that they just keep moving forward and stay positive because if you go into your goals and your ambitions with a negative mindset, you're never going to get far. You just have to believe you can do it, even though life is going to give you hurdles and obstacles in your way, you have to keep moving forward. You can’t just stop and give up.

Who has been most influential to you in your education this far and why?

Honestly probably here at Phoenix. They really talked to me. They really touched me. They told me that they wanted me to succeed in life and I think that really helped me make my decisions on what I want to do and how I want to work on my career. They helped me a lot.

As a leader of the class of 2023, what is your hope for the Class of 2023 as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

It’s a new journey so we’re just starting our journey, our lives, our careers. I just want everyone to be successful and to never think that they can’t do anything. You can really do anything you put your mind to as long as you’re disciplined. If you really want it, you’ll do whatever it takes, so I just hope we all have good lives and everybody’s healthy.
