Introduction
Will Shoaf

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

Next year I’m going to Stephen F. Austin State University. I’m going to major in English and minor in education and hopefully become a high school English teacher.

I’ve always been really passionate about writing and English. It’s been a strength of mine for a while. I didn’t realize it until recently, but I also naturally tend to lead people or help people, especially learning, lots of people always say that I would be a great teacher.

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your education and how did you overcome it?

I’ve struggled with ADHD, though I didn’t realize it, for my entire life. I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t do these things that everybody else can do. Eventually I figured out that I had ADHD and after I started taking the steps to treat myself like I have ADHD and not like it’s a personal failing, I got a lot better and now I don’t struggle with it as much anymore.

My former physics teacher, who is now my environmental science teacher, Mr. Lerma, was very influential to me. That was the first year I started thinking of myself in the terms that I have ADHD and I need extra help. It was very difficult. It was accepting that I had a disability.
At some point I was not understanding a topic very well. One of the things I used to do was shut down and quit. If I didn’t understand it the very first time, I wouldn’t’ understand it ever.

Mr. Lerma noticed that I was struggling. He actively helped me and asked me what I needed help with. That moment was a catalyst for me feeling like I could do this – I could get better and ask for help.  It made me think about how I want to teach and what kind of teacher I want to be when I become a teacher.

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

I’m going to go to Trinity University to major in neuroscience. For a while I was thinking about becoming a nurse, but they don’t have that major at Trinity, so I was just thinking about something broader in STEM. That one seemed the most interesting. I think neuroscience is a combination of a lot of different sciences, so I don’t have to limit to just one thing.

Who has been most influential to you in your education this far and why?

My mom. My dad passed away when I was little, so as a single mom, my mom had to play both the mom and dad figure, while also balancing a full-time job. She is just kind of that resilience that I aspire to be.

As a leader of the Class of 2025, what is your hope for the class as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

I hope that they don’t get discouraged. I hope they complete their further education and not think that if they don’t look a certain way, or are a certain way, that they can’t be as good as other people.

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

I will be attending Texas State University to major in early childhood education with a minor in dance. I’ve always had a passion for teaching. It’s something I have wanted to do since I was little. I got to see my little sister grow up and so her going to elementary school made me super passionate about that. With ALA, we get so many opportunities to mentor younger students at Euclid. Or even here at Fox Tech, I assist with sixth grade dance. I chose my minor because I have been dancing since I was three. I just wanted to be able to keep that in my life.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

I joined SAISD four years ago when I came to ALA. Here in SAISD, they really let you advocate for yourself. ALA has really helped me become a better student and it’s really impacted my education a lot being able to have all these opportunities. With whatever I decided to do, I knew I would have the support of the district and also ALA.

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your education and how did you overcome it?

Overcoming mental health issues. I’ve had a lot of support from family and friends and our counselors here are amazing. I’ve really learned how to regulate that myself, but I struggled with that a lot and I know it happens a lot in high school, soI just want to bring more awareness to it.

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your education and how did you overcome it?

Speaking. Speaking had always been a big challenge for me. ALA really helped. They are really big on project-based learning, and with projects, you have to talk. In the beginning, I would just shut down.

My freshman year, I took a leap and decided to join an after-school activity – theatre. I figured the only way you get over it is if you do it.

I did really well that first year. I was a first-string actor on our UIL and we made it all the way to regionals. As a freshman that was terrifying. And the next year I did the Texas Thespian Festival and I made it to the international festival. Doing all that, I decided this is what I want to do.

Next year I will go to Texas Tech University in Lubbock to pursue a degree in acting.

There is no easy way to do public speaking. And now that’s what I do.

I further help it by doing tours. I have done at least 43 tours from big middle schools to individual family tours.

As a leader of the Class of 2025, what is your hope for the class as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

I’ve been here at ALA since its opening. I was in the fourth grade class. I started at this campus originally before the renovations. I can say it has shaped me well and I have also shaped the school as well.

The graduating class of 2025 is the guinea pigs. I started at this campus originally before the renovations. We’ve gone through so much. COVID hit and we were also the first freshmen to come back in person. We did the first international trip. I hope this class proves the model works - that they are already prepared, they know what they are going to do out in the world. I’m hoping we can prove ourselves and prove the value of ALA so we can have more schools like it.

El próximo año iré a Stephen F. Austin State University.
