CAST Med High School
Class of 2025 Valedictorian
Caleb Segovia

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

Next year, I will be attending Duke University and majoring in Political Science. I chose this path because I’ve always been passionate about justice and using my voice to speak up for those who feel unheard. My goal is to become a lawyer, and I believe studying political science will help me understand how laws are made, how systems work, and how I can be part of changing them for the better.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

SAISD schools have taught me the value of perseverance and community. From teachers who pushed me to think critically, to opportunities to serve and lead in my school, I’ve grown into someone who sees challenges as chances to grow. Being in SAISD has shown me that leadership starts with service.

As a leader of the Class of 2025, what is your hope for the class as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

My hope for the Class of 2025 is that we walk into our futures with purpose, compassion, and courage. Whether we're going to college, work, or the military, I hope we keep striving to be a light in our communities and never forget the strength we’ve built together. We’ve come this far—now it’s time to lead with love.

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

Next year, I plan to return to San Antonio to continue supporting my community and further my research at the Avanzando Caminos initiative, a study with the UT Health San Antonio institution. I will be majoring in nursing at the University of Texas at Austin, driven by the growing shortage of nurses and the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This experience has deepened my passion for healthcare, and I am committed to making a difference in the field.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

SAISD schools have shaped me into the person I am today by introducing me to a passionate and supportive community of staff and students. With the guidance of my teachers, counselors, and friends, I have grown both academically and personally, gaining the confidence to pursue my goals. Beyond academics, I have learned valuable life lessons that continue to inspire me as I move forward in my education and career.

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your education and how did you overcome it?

The greatest challenge I have overcome during my education has been balancing school while taking care of my father, who is disabled and wheelchair-bound. Learning how to manage my time efficiently allowed me to fulfill my responsibilities as a caregiver while staying committed to my studies. This experience has shaped me into a more disciplined student and made me truly appreciate the support and opportunities provided by my school, CAST Med.
