Highlands High School
Class of 2025 Valedictorian
Roxana Aguilar

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

Next year I will go to college where I will study psychology and will later specialize in developmental psychology. I chose this path because I've always had a passion for psychology, and because after years of babysitting I discovered my love for working with children.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

Although the only SAISD school I have attended is Highlands High School, it has greatly shaped my character and prepared me for the future. The difficult classes it offered led me to push myself and prepared me for college though the time management and studying skills I had to learn. Highlands has also helped me become confident and a leader through the relationships I have formed and clubs I joined.

What’s the greatest challenge you’ve overcome during your education, and how did you overcome it?

The most difficult challenge I've faced during high school is learning how to manage my time properly. High School comes with not only challenging work but also clubs, relationships, and hobbies students want to keep up with and that was difficult for me at first. What helped me most was planning ahead of time and communicating with my teachers.

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

For the 2025 school year, I plan to continue my studies at the University of Oregon, where I am registered as a history major. I chose this path because understanding the past is essential to shaping the future, especially in the realm of politics. I hope to use my education to develop not only a strong foundation but understanding of past events in order to contribute to a meaningful change for the future.

What’s the greatest challenge you’ve overcome during your education, and how did you overcome it?

The greatest challenge I have overcome during my education has been balancing school with many other important aspects of my life. Throughout high school, I played sports, participated in clubs, joined a STEM program, stayed involved in my church community, remained consistent in the gym, and dedicated time to friends and family—all while maintaining a high GPA. Juggling these responsibilities and hobbies has been nothing but exhausting at times, but it has taught me the value of time management, perseverance and self-discipline. While it hasn’t always been easy, I have learned to prioritize my wellbeing and find moments for myself amidst a busy schedule. More than anything, I am thankful for my challenges, as they have strengthened me as a person and I am feeling prepared for what is to come next.

As a leader of the Class of 2025, what is your hope for the class as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

I hope that the Class of 2025 takes the time to appreciate how far they have come. Being grateful and recognizing our accomplishments is essential when striving for more, as focusing on what we lack will do nothing good but hold us back. As we move on to the next chapter, I hope everyone continues to set ambitious goals and confidently work toward them.
