Jefferson High School
Class of 2025 Valedictorian
Sofia Rete

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

I will be majoring in biology in order to become a dentist. I believe that representation in the medical field is very important, which has inspired me to pursue a career in this field. I want my community to have the assurance that someone from a similar background will always be at their service.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

I’ve always had great teachers who have inspired me to continue my academic career and who have supported me through this journey. I am extremely grateful to be part of this district that emphasizes the importance of education and offers their students unique opportunities.
The IB Diploma Program has been the greatest challenge since it has pushed me to my limits. The amount of assessments and exams we are expected to take are a lot but with the support of my teachers, I’ve been able to complete them successfully. Even though the program is difficult, it has prepared me for college and allowed me to meet some of my closest friends.

Who has been most influential to you in your education this far and why?

My parents have been the most influential in my education and I owe all of my achievements to them. Ever since I was a small child, they have always placed emphasis on the importance of gaining an education that can provide me stability in life. Both coming from a poverty-stricken household, the opportunity to attend college was stolen from them since they had to start working at a young age to support their families financially. I know that if my parents had gotten the opportunity to go to school and get an education when they were younger, they would have taken it in a heartbeat. My biggest desire in life is making them proud, and attending college and gaining a high-quality education, would fulfill both our dreams.

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

Next year I plan to major in biology or biomedical engineering. It’s always been my dream to go into the medical field so I could work as a doctor. Being a doctor has always been important to me.

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your education and how did you overcome it?

The greatest challenge was when my grandpa died. It's part of why I want to become a doctor. The passing of my grandpa really hit me hard. I was 16. I never struggled a lot coming up but at that time when it happened, I was crushed. I tried to make the most positive I could out of it. I actually made most of my friends after that, because that’s what my grandpa would have wanted for me.

As a leader of the Class of 2025, what is your hope for the class as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

I’m really proud of the classmates I have, and I think they’re all going to succeed. I wish them nothing but the best. I hope they pursue their dreams, and I hope none of them stop. I want them to be the best they can be no matter what.
