Travis Early College High School
Class of 2025 Valedictorian
Jason Llanes

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

Growing up, I have attended three different SAISD schools. From kindergarten to third grade, I attended Kate Schenck Elementary, a small school close to my house, where I was part of the ‘English as a Second Language’ classes. To make sure I didn’t have a rough transition from Spanish to English, my parents moved me to the new Advanced Learning Academy. I attended ALA from its original opening in 2016 up until 8th grade. This school taught me a variety of topics that I wouldn't have been able to learn if I had attended other schools. They had a makerspace, fine arts building, and an emphasis on focusing on the student’s mental health. I believe that the last one really benefited me in the long run since I learned at a young age to look after myself and how I felt. Then after hearing about the opportunities at Travis ECHS, I switched schools one final time. These last four years, I have met many talented and intelligent people that all have a different story to tell that I have the honor of calling my friends. If it wasn’t for these schools, I wouldn’t be the same person, wouldn’t have had the same interactions, lessons, and more. I am grateful and appreciative of the events that influenced me to become the person I am today.

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your education and how did you overcome it?

My family has roots that connect to Mexico and even all the way to Spain. My mother’s side of the family is completely Mexican since she was born in Tampico, a small city in Mexico, and worked very hard to move to the US. My father’s side of the family has Mexican roots through my grandfather, who also grew up in a small town. As a result, I grew up speaking Spanish which led to me being placed in bilingual classes rather than a regular class. This created a variety of issues throughout my education. I struggled to read long passages, and my writing was basic because my vocabulary was limited. My frustration with learning in English led to an important realization and decided that I would simply have to work harder to overcome this challenge. I tried different methods to help, like reading slowly or expanding my vocabulary but the method that helped me out the most was lots and lots of practice. The success I achieved by investing in extra practice taught me that some of the challenges I encounter in life are going to need more effort and practice than others.

As a leader of the Class of 2025, what is your hope for the class as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

My hope for the classmates at Travis and for those from outside of our school is that we all find our “thing.” I hope we all find that one thing that makes us get out of bed and really interests us. That thing that makes us grow as people and helps those around us. For some this might be career related with pushing the human race to somewhere we haven’t gone before, some form of legacy, or something else entirely. In Travis, I look around and see people with a great level of potential and good that everyone can do. I have no doubt that the rest of the class scattered across SAISD has the same amount of potential. Growing up in three different schools, I saw that same spark in every single classmate. This is why I hope that we find that thing because this community, city, and even world can grow in so many ways with the amount of potential everyone has. Imagine a world where everyone reaches their true potential and has a lasting impact in their own form, this is my hope for our class.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

My SAISD education began in the second grade at Will Rogers Elementary. Having moved into the district out of necessity, I initially felt very isolated. However, over time as I was able to gain my footing, I grew in confidence and closeness with my peers. At Rogers, I met one of my, still today, best friends, and she influenced me to attend Young Women’s Leadership Academy for middle school. YWLA allowed me to grow immeasurably as a student, as there, I learned to sincerely value knowledge and curiosity. Then, again influenced by friendship, I decided to attend Travis ECHS for high school. Deciding to come to Travis is likely the best decision I have ever made. I’ve found myself amidst an amazing group of students that challenge me but also support me. The friends I’ve had the privilege of getting to know and the teachers I have had the honor of learning from have changed the trajectory of my life. SAISD schools have shaped me into the person I am today because of the community they’ve allowed me to create. I am lucky — throughout my time in SAISD — to have met genuinely amazing peers and mentors, all of whom have taught and reinforced within me the necessary skills that will enable me to be successful going forward into university and beyond.

What is the greatest challenge you have overcome in your education and how did you overcome it?

As a child, my life was overshadowed by the negative impacts of change, and similar to the story of many, I sought solace in the stability of my education. Initially, my academic successes stemmed from my desire to control my life. Through the loss of my home, instability with my parents, and grief, I struggled to hold on to myself, eventually realizing that to succeed, I’d simply have to work harder to take control of my future. I fought for a spot at the top of my class, and I fought to lead my peers because if it’s the work of others that got me to survive, then it must take that same effort from me to help my community in the way they’ve helped me. The challenges I’ve faced throughout high school have become a catalyst for my positive perspective on life and education. Because of them, I understand the value of effort for the betterment of what you love. The difficult circumstances through which I have grown have made me a better student so far and will continue to do so as I carry on with my education.

As a leader of the Class of 2025, what is your hope for the class as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

The students of this class are some of the most hardworking, competitive, and compassionate people I have ever met. I have no doubt that the class of 2025 will grow into strong community leaders who will make a difference for the people around them. My hope for this class as they move on to the next chapter of their lives is that they’re able to live for themselves as well as their community. It is critical that, as graduates of SAISD, we return to this community to give back once we have reached success; I hope that the students of this class understand that they are best able to give back by supporting their own needs first, that these students will find satisfaction in what they do for themselves, and that they are able to reach success in whatever way they choose to define it.
