Young Men's Leadership Academy
Class of 2025 Valedictorian
Diego Guzman

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

Art connects everyone in a community on a deep human level. My dream is to bring art closer to any community I’m in, so I’m pursuing a bachelor's in art history at the University of Texas at Austin. From there, I plan to become an art curator to bring my dreams to fruition.
Through my high-school career, my family faced many hardships and death. To help myself and my family cope, I looked toward art as an outlet. Not only did doing so support my family's feelings of grief, but it also bolstered my creative and emotional skills.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

From my moment entering high school at an SAISD school, I’ve been given numerous opportunities to grow as a person. From president positions, to competitions and events, everything has helped me shaped me into the bold college student of today that’s ready to face the world head on.

Who has been most influential to you in your education this far and why?

The most influential person in my education, and in life, is my art teacher Mrs. Moczygemba-Smith. As a person, she fills her schedule constantly but always manages to complete everything with grace. Not only this, but she’s kind and molds her students and peers into their best version of themselves. Her attitude, boldness, and elegance in everything she does is why she’s the type of person I dream of becoming.

What are your plans for next year and why did you choose this path?

In the upcoming year I plan on attending the University of Texas at San Antonio to pursue a computer science major. I’ve chosen to major in computer science because I’ve always had a deep fascination with computers. I wish to pursue a career in software development and create games to help children learn.

How have SAISD schools shaped you into the person you are today?

Since I’ve entered the SAISD district, I’ve only ever been at Young Men’s Leadership Academy. My time at Young Men’s has been nothing but wonderful. They’ve taught me the meaning of leadership, discipline, and character.

As a leader of the Class of 2025, what is your hope for the class as they move on to the next chapter of their lives?

I have been with this class since the beginning of sixth grade. We’ve faced many obstacles together and accomplished even more. I am proud to call them my family and wish nothing but the best for them while they pursue their future endeavors.
