A new partnership between CAST Tech High School and the University of Texas at San Antonio has officially launched that will accelerate a student’s college career to a professional high-demand job.
The program is called the Early College Academy, which gives students an opportunity to earn college credits that will count toward their degree program at UTSA.
CAST Tech principal, Dr. Melissa Alcala, a UTSA alumna, said that the Early College Academy speaks to the power of partnerships.
“Staff from CAST Tech, UTSA, and SAISD co-created this program, which benefits our students academically and financially, giving them the confidence they need to succeed post-graduation,” Alcala said. “This investment being made by SAISD and UTSA through the Early College Academy assists us in creating a pipeline of local employees to fill the future technology and business positions here in San Antonio and beyond.”
Jeanne Russell, executive director of the CAST Schools Network, said that partnerships only work if every partner is all in. Those involved include Dr. Taylor Eighmy, UTSA president, entrepreneur and businessman Graham Weston, Dr. Robert Jaklich, interim superintendent of San Antonio ISD, and many more who worked behind the scenes to bring the Early College Academy to life.
Jaklich said he’s in the business of hope.
“Today is a landmark day. We are providing hope. We are providing endless opportunities. Forty-seven percent of our students here are enrolled in dual credit,” Jaklich said. “After today, I know that number is going to double. We are so honored to serve you as our students.”
Weston believes investing in the students will create an incentive for them to stay in San Antonio.
“There are so many great tech jobs that we can bring to San Antonio, and this brings great opportunities for San Antonians. That’s what CAST Tech and this collaboration is all about,” Weston said. “If we have the tech talent and a pipeline of great young talented people, they’ll come here.”
Hezron Perez is a member of the inaugural graduating class at CAST Tech and is now in his first year at UTSA, majoring in computer science. Perez came back to talk to his former classmates and friends about the great opportunities ahead of them wherever they decide to go to college. But for him, UTSA is providing him with the chance to open doors that he never thought possible.
“Because of the foundation CAST Tech and UTSA had already built together, and the college credits I obtained at UTSA’s downtown campus, I have a plan that will allow me to graduate from UTSA with a degree in cybersecurity in just three years, saving me time and money,” he said. “I could have worked just as hard at another school. It turns out that my hard work matched up with these opportunities and I got to take advantage of all these things.”
An impressive 45% of the CAST Tech class of 2021 earned credits from UTSA, which offers transferrable credits into five degree programs from three academic colleges, including business, information solutions and cybersecurity, computer engineering and computer science. Employers represented included AT&T, Frost, Geekdom, HEB, Jungle Disk, Rackspace, Tech Block, the University Health System, USAA and Whataburger.

Se ha lanzado oficialmente una nueva asociación entre CAST Tech High School, CAST Schools y The University of Texas at San Antonio que acelerará la carrera universitaria de un estudiante a una profesión de alta demanda.
El programa se llama Early College Academy y les brindará a los estudiantes la oportunidad de recibir créditos universitarios que contarán para su título en UTSA.
La directora de CAST Tech y egresada de UTSA, la Dra. Melissa Alcala, dijo que la Early College Academy es un ejemplo del poder de las asociaciones.
“El personal de CAST Tech, UTSA y SAISD crearon juntos este programa, el cual beneficia a nuestros estudiantes de forma académica y financiera, lo cual les da la confianza que necesitan para lograr el éxito después de la graduación”, dijo Alcala. “Esta inversión realizada por SAISD y UTSA a través de la Early College Academy nos ayuda a crear una fuente local de empleados para ocupar los puestos futuros de tecnología y negocios aquí en San Antonio y más allá”.
Jeanne Russell, directora ejecutiva de CAST Schools Network, dijo que las asociaciones solo funcionan si cada socio está totalmente comprometido. Jaklich dijo que él está en el negocio de la esperanza.
“Hoy es un día monumental. Estamos proporcionando esperanza. Estamos proporcionando un sin fin de oportunidades. Un cuarenta y siete por ciento de nuestros estudiantes aquí están matriculados en doble crédito”, dijo Jaklich. “A partir de hoy, sé que ese número se va a duplicar. Estamos tan honrados de servirles a ustedes como nuestros estudiantes”.
Weston cree que invertir en los estudiantes creará un incentivo para que permanezcan en San Antonio.
“Hay tantos empleos geniales de tecnología que podemos traer a San Antonio, y esto trae oportunidades geniales para las personas de San Antonio. De eso se trata CAST Tech y esta colaboración”, dijo Weston. “Si tenemos el talento de tecnología y una fuente de jóvenes talentosos geniales, ellos vendrán aquí”.
Hezron Perez es un miembro de la clase inaugural de graduación en CAST Tech y ahora está en su primer año en UTSA donde está estudiando ciencias informáticas. Perez regresó para hablar con sus antiguos compañeros y amigos sobre las oportunidades geniales que les esperan en done deseen estudiar después de la preparatoria. Pero para él, UTSA le está proporcionando la oportunidad de abrir puertas que nunca pensó que sería posible.
“Debido a la base que CAST Tech y UTSA ya han edificado, y a los créditos universitarios que recibí en el campus del centro de la ciudad de UTSA, tengo un plan que me permitirá graduarme de UTSA con un título en seguridad informática en tres años, lo cual me ahorrará tiempo y dinero”, dijo él. “Podría haberme esforzado igual en otra escuela. Resulta que mi esfuerzo se ajustó con estas oportunidades y pude aprovechar todas estas cosas”.
