Herff teacher named Bilingual Teacher of Year
11/19/2021

Ms. Ligarde Bilingual Teacher of YearNinette Ligarde and her students at Herff Elementary School got quite the surprise the Thursday before Thanksgiving. The dual language fifth grade class was interrupted for a very special announcement, when Principal Dr. Kelly Allen and Interim Superintendent Dr. Robert Jaklich came in with the surprise news that Ligarde had received the 2021 Bilingual Teacher of the Year Award for Region 20.

They were accompanied by other campus leaders, district officials, and representatives from Education Service Center, Region 20.

Her students applauded, and one immediately got up to give her a congratulatory hug. In the short ceremony, her students took turns talking about things that make Ms. Ligarde a great teacher.

“She always takes her time on weekends to help us,” one student said.

Ligarde, who has been in bilingual education for more than 25 years, quickly turned the recognition back around to her students.

“They are the motor behind everything I do,” she said. “This is the best honor I’ve ever received.”

Ligarde began teaching in San Antonio ISD, but moved to Puebla, Mexico in the early 1990s, where she provided free English as a Second Language classes to the underserved communities of Puebla. After noticing a need for inclusive education and special programs for the gifted and talented, she decided to open her own bilingual school called Instituto Interactivo Alfred Binet (IIAB), where she and her school received numerous recognitions.

In 2020, she moved back to San Antonio and began teaching at Herff Elementary, where she and her students adapted to the challenges presented by the pandemic.

Working at Herff, she fosters collaboration with other teachers and takes every opportunity to make a difference for her students.

"As the saying in Spanish goes,” Ligarde said in her application materials, “‘camarón que se duerme, se lo lleva la corriente’ — when it comes to our students, we do not have a second to waste.”

Ligarde will be formally awarded at the ESC-20 2021 Virtual Bilingual Conference on Saturday, Dec. 4.
