Six San Antonio ISD students were matched to the top-tier university of their choice through the QuestBridge Scholarship program. Known as Match Scholarship Recipients, these six high school seniors will receive full four-year scholarships to the nation’s top colleges, totaling more than $1.8 million toward their post-secondary education. 

 The students and their match universities are:

• Advanced Learning Academy’s Destinie Sharp, who matched with Rice University
• Jefferson High School’s Bella Moreno, who matched with Boston University
• St. Philip’s College Early College High School’s Lewis Morse, who matched with Washington & Lee University 
• Travis Early College High School’s Jason Gonzalez, who matched with the University of Chicago 
• Travis Early College High School’s Lizet Rodriguez, who matched with Princeton University 
• Young Women’s Leadership Academy’s Ruth Villicana, who matched with Brown University

Lewis Morse, from St. Philip’s College Early College High School, learned about the opportunity in 10th grade and even applied for the College Prep Scholars (QuestBridge for juniors) in 11th grade, and was accepted.

“I am very happy because I got in. I love how small the university is, that it is a family atmosphere,” said Morse. “Not only is the college a family environment, but the relationship among other QuestBridge scholars will be a family to me. I’m ready for college and do well there. It’s just the beginning.”

The Match Scholarship is offered as part of a generous financial aid package provided by the college that covers the full cost of attendance, including tuition, room and board, books and supplies, and travel expenses. 

“The QuestBridge National College Match is a once-in-a-lifetime admissions and scholarship opportunity for students to gain educational equity and cultivate their academic success,” said Myra Fuentes, a college bound advisor at Travis Early College High School. “Ultimately, it allows QuestBridge Scholars to enrich their generation's cultural value and indisputably changes the trajectory of their family legacy.” 

The QuestBridge National College Match is a national program that elevates high-achieving high school seniors from low-income backgrounds. Out of over 16,500 applicants this year, more than 1,600 students across the country were named as Match Scholarship Recipients with one of QuestBridge’s 45 college partners. The SAISD Match Scholarship Recipients represent a select group of students who will receive a full four-year scholarship provided by the universities where they matched.

“The achievements of our Match Scholarship Recipients are a culmination of their hard work and perseverance,” said Ana McCullough, co-founder and chair of QuestBridge. “Thanks to the commitment of our college partners, these deserving students can tap into their full potential without worrying about the cost of a great education.” 

For Jefferson’s Bella Moreno, getting to meet new people of different backgrounds and cultures is what she’s looking forward to the most.

“It means everything to us because without the scholarship, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to continue on fighting for my future,” she said. “Everything’s been building up to this moment and I was grateful to be one of the match recipients and pursue a higher level of education. I’d be the first to go to a four-year college in my family and on a full ride. It’s overwhelming and I’m very appreciative of the opportunity I’m being given.”

The moment Destinie Sharp from the Advanced Learning Academy found out was suspenseful and emotional. Several years ago, her sister was a QuestBridge finalist but did not get matched. 

“I saw ‘matched’ and I screamed!” she said. “I heard my sister say ‘you’re going to Rice.’ It was just an overwhelming feeling mostly because I was so excited and happy and relieved because I wouldn’t have to pay for college. It was a lot of feelings at once. I was very proud.”

Rice was her number one choice. It’s close to home and it’s a great school, she said. 

“I want to thank QuestBridge immensely,” Sharp said. “They’re giving me a huge opportunity to live the life that some of my family couldn’t, so I hope I can do them well and I’ll try my best to continue the legacy.” 

For the majority of QuestBridge Scholars, going to college is a first-time experience for them and their families. 

Lizet Rodriguez from Travis Early College High School, is from a family of immigrants. She matched with Princeton University and is excited to take on all that it has to offer as an Ivy League school. She has found support from her teachers at Travis as well as understanding from her family that she will be far away.

“There was so much support with my teachers, they’re here to 5 o’clock, sometimes 6, helping with essays and applications,” she said. “We have a strong community here. I am 100% ready. For me, I did this application and I still don’t feel like I deserve it. But I’m so grateful I got into Princeton.”

Jason Gonzalez, also from Travis, will have to get used to a completely different way of life in the Windy City. But he says he’s ready for Chicago.

“I’ve been in Texas my entire life. I want to go to a really cold place, an extremely large city, and a foreign environment from what I’m used to,” he said. “I haven’t grasped the magnitude of this yet.”

Ruth Villicana, from Young Women’s Leadership Academy, found out about her QuestBridge match in choir class among her friends. The match, for her, is unbelievable. But this path started years ago with her Beacon Hill Elementary teacher Ms. Garcia, and the support of her counselor, Ms. Cash.

“It’s something you dream about, and it doesn’t feel real until it happens to you,” she said. “Seeing other girls from our school get it, and then thinking one day that could be you, and then it is you, it’s surreal.”

The seniors are now excited to end their last year of high school knowing that the start of their college experience is already set.

SAISD reconoce a 6 beneficiarios de la beca QuestBridge Match Scholarship

Seis estudiantes de San Antonio ISD recibieron becas a las universidades de primer nivel de su elección a través del programa de QuestBridge Scholarship. Conocidos como beneficiarios de la beca Match Scholarship, estos seis estudiantes de último año de preparatoria recibirán becas completas de cuatro años a las universidades superiores de la nación, con un total de más de $1.8 millones de dólares hacia su educación superior.

Bella Moreno de Jefferson, ansía más que nada conocer a nuevas personas de diferentes orígenes y culturas.

“Significa todo para nosotros porque sin la beca, no estaba segura si pudiera continuar luchando por mi futuro”, dijo ella. “Todo el esfuerzo ha culminado hasta este momento y estoy agradecida de ser una de las beneficiarias y emprender en un nuevo nivel de educación. Yo sería la primera en mi familia en ir a una universidad de cuatros años con una beca completa. Es sobrecogedor y estoy muy agradecida por la oportunidad que se me ha dado”.

El momento en el que Destinie Sharp de Advanced Learning Academy se enteró estuvo lleno de suspenso y fue muy emotivo. Hace varios años, su hermana fue una finalista de QuestBridge pero no fue seleccionada. 

“¡Vi que fui ‘aceptada’ y grité!”, dijo ella. “Escuché que mi hermana dijo: ‘vas a ir a Rice’. Fue más que nada un sentimiento sobrecogedor porque estaba tan emocionada y contenta y aliviada porque no tendría que pagar por la universidad. Fueron muchos sentimientos a la vez. Me sentí muy orgullosa”.

Rice era su selección número uno. Está cerca de casa y es una gran escuela, dijo ella. 

“Quiero agradecerle mucho a QuestBridge”, dijo Sharp. “Ellos me están dando una gran oportunidad de vivir la vida que algunos de los miembros de mi familia no pudieron, así que espero poder representarlos bien y me esforzaré al máximo por continuar el legado”. 

Para la mayoría de los beneficiarios de la beca de QuestBridge, el ir a la universidad es una experiencia nueva para ellos y para sus familias. 

Lizet Rodriguez de Travis Early College High School viene de una familia de inmigrantes. Ella fue aceptada a Princeton University y está emocionada de ver todo lo que puede ofrecer como escuela Ivy League. Ella ha encontrado apoyo por parte de sus maestros en Travis al igual que entendimiento por parte de su familia ya que estará lejos.

“Hubo tanto apoyo con mis maestros, se han quedado hasta las 5 o a veces 6 de la tarde para ayudar con ensayos y solicitudes de ingreso”, dijo ella. “Tenemos a una comunidad fuerte aquí. Estoy 100% lista. Yo llené esta solicitud y aún siento que no lo merezco, pero estoy tan agradecida de haber sido aceptada en Princeton”.

Jason Gonzalez, que también es de Travis, tendrá que acostumbrarse a un modo de vida totalmente diferente en la Ciudad de los Vientos. Pero él dice que está listo para Chicago.

“He estado en Texas toda mi vida. Quiero ir a un lugar muy frío, a una ciudad grande y a un entorno ajeno al que estoy acostumbrado”, dijo él. “Aún no he captado la magnitud”.

Ruth Villicana, de Young Women’s Leadership Academy, se enteró de su beca QuestBridge cuando estaba en su clase de coro entre sus amigas. El haber sido aceptada, para ella, es increíble. Pero ella comenzó esta trayectoria hace años con la Srta. Garcia, su maestra de Beacon Hill Elementary, y el apoyo de su consejera, la Srta. Cash.

“Es algo con lo que uno sueña, y no se siente real hasta que te sucede a ti”, dijo ella. “El ver que otras chicas de nuestra escuela la han recibido y pensar que algún día podría tocarme a mí, y cuando sucede, es irreal”.

Los estudiantes de último año de preparatoria están emocionados de terminar su último año de preparatoria sabiendo que el comienzo de su experiencia universitaria ya está preparado.
