First came CyberPatriots. Now Lanier High School is adding a JROTC Cyber Pilot program to its list of offerings. While CyberPatriots is a widespread program at San Antonio ISD, the U.S. Army recently selected Lanier to be a participant in its JROTC Cyber Pilot flagship program.
The Mighty Voks Battalion is part of the inaugural cohort of the competitive program, making Lanier one of only two schools in Texas and among 11 in the nation to be invited. Additional schools across the country will be invited to join the program in following years.
The four-year, honors-level cyber curriculum will launch in the 2022-2023 school year with support for real-life experiences such as mentoring sessions, shadowing, internships, and participation in extracurricular programs. This program is different than the current traditional JROTC program with Leadership Education Training, which will still be offered at Lanier.
Lt. General Stephen G. Fogarty, who is the commanding general of the U.S. Army Cyber command (ARCYBER), said that keeping up with the future in cyberspace requires dedicated people and bright minds.
“That’s why programs like the JROTC Cyber Pilot program are absolutely vital to building fresh capabilities for understanding emerging threats and creating innovative solutions that help us stay ahead,” he said.
The new Cyber Pilot program is intended to be a modernization effort to infuse critical STEM curriculum in high schools across the country. Students will learn niche skills that will prepare them for careers in cybersecurity and other cyber-related fields. The robust program focuses on detailed courses like Introduction to Cybersecurity, Global Connectivity, Hardware Standards, Operating Systems, Cryptography Networking, Leader Education Training, and a Capstone Project.
The courses will build on each other year after year.
U.S. Army representatives made a site visit to determine infrastructure needs and to order computers, monitors and other resources at no-cost to the District. The equipment will include top of the line technology, as well as university-level curriculum that will be used during the program.
“The opportunities afforded to these students will be immense,” said LTC (Retired) Santiago Bueno, who leads the JROTC program at Lanier. “This can change their lives.”
Locally, the University of Texas at San Antonio is one of the top schools for cyber programs in the nation. The average starting salaries in San Antonio for entry-level cybersecurity jobs is near $75,000 a year.

Lanier es escuela inaugural del programa Piloto de Informática para JROTC
Primero se implementó el programa de CyberPatriots. Ahora, Lanier High School está agregando un programa Piloto de Informática para JROTC a su lista de ofertas. Mientras que CyberPatriots es un programa extenso en San Antonio ISD, el Ejército de EE. UU. recientemente seleccionó a Lanier para participar en su programa Piloto emblemático de Informática para JROTC.

El currículo de informática de cuatro años a nivel de honores se lanzará durante el año escolar 2022-2023 con el apoyo de experiencias prácticas como sesiones de asesoría, observación, pasantías y participación en programas extracurriculares. Este programa es diferente al programa actual tradicional de JROTC con Capacitación de Educación de Liderazgo, el cual aún se ofrece en Lanier.
El Teniente General Stephen G. Fogarty, quien es el comandante general del Mando de Informática del Ejército de EE. UU (ARCYBER), dijo que permanecer al día con las necesidades de la informática en el futuro requiere de personas dedicadas y mentes brillantes.
“Es por eso que los programas como el Piloto de Informática de JROTC son absolutamente fundamentales para desarrollar las nuevas capacidades necesarias para entender las amenazas emergentes y crear soluciones innovadoras que nos ayudan a mantenernos a la vanguardia”, dijo él.
El nuevo programa Piloto de Informática tiene como fin ser un esfuerzo de modernización para infundir el importante currículo STEM en las preparatorias de todo el país. Los estudiantes aprenderán habilidades especializadas que los prepararán para carreras de seguridad informática y otros campos relacionados con la informática. El programa robusto se enfoca en cursos detallados como Introducción a la Seguridad Informática, Conectividad Global, Estándares de Hardware, Sistemas Operativos, Interconexión Criptográfica, Capacitación de Educación de Liderazgo y un Proyecto Final.
Los cursos se reforzarán entre sí año tras año.
Los representantes del Ejército de EE. UU. visitaron la escuela para determinar las necesidades de infraestructura y para mandar a pedir computadoras, monitores y otros recursos sin costo al distrito. El equipo incluirá tecnología de primera línea, al igual que un currículo de nivel universitario que se utilizará durante el programa.
“Las oportunidades que se les ofrecerán a estos estudiantes serán inmensas”, dijo el Teniente Coronel (jubilado) Santiago Bueno, quien dirige el programa de JROTC en Lanier. “Esto puede cambiar sus vidas”.
Localmente, The University of Texas at San Antonio es una de las escuelas superiores para programas informáticos en la nación. El salario promedio inicial en San Antonio para trabajos de nivel básico de seguridad informática es casi $75,000 al año.
