More San Antonio ISD students will be able to afford postsecondary education at Alamo Colleges after a recent expansion of the AlamoPROMISE program effective Fall 2022. The program, which ensures access to postsecondary education by providing for the cost of tuition and mandatory fees to graduating seniors in the San Antonio area, has expanded in SAISD to now include seniors at the Advanced Learning Academy, CAST Tech High School, Cooper Academy at Navarro, St. Philip's Early College High School, Travis Early College High School, and the Young Men’s Leadership Academy.

The schools join the district’s other comprehensive high schools and the Young Women’s Leadership Academy whose students already receive last-dollar scholarship funding, which, added to any other federal and state aid a student receives, will cover a student’s tuition and mandatory fees at any of the five Alamo Colleges campuses, a cost of over $3,000 per year.  

“SAISD is one of our strongest partners,” Stephanie Vasquez, chief program officer of AlamoPROMISE, said. “The majority of our Promise Scholars come from SAISD, and we want to make sure we keep a strong working relationship with the district to ensure students are able to attend our colleges without financial burden.”

When the program launched for Fall 2020, 546 SAISD students enrolled in Alamo Colleges as Promise Scholars. 

To take advantage of the AlamoPROMISE, students need to complete a Save Your Seat form, submit their admission application through Apply Texas, and submit a FAFSA or TASFA. Eligibility is based on school enrollment, not on income or academic standing.

“This is such a tremendous help for families,” Young Men’s Leadership Academy College Bound Advisor Jocelyn More said. “Some families may on paper make over $50,000 and theoretically can assist in paying for their child’s education, but their tax return does not reflect the true reality of most families that have expenses that are not reported on an annual tax return.”

YMLA senior Evan Rivera-Gonzales is planning to enter a 2+2 program as he begins his education toward a career in Sports Management. He was worried about paying for college especially after his mom warned him of the difficulty of paying back student loans.

“It will help us save money, especially if something unexpected happens,” Rivera-Gonzales said. 

At Phoenix Middle College, where students receive their high school credits through Cooper Academy at Navarro while they work toward an industry certification at St. Philip’s College Southwest Campus, the addition of the Promise means more students will be able to earn certifications to jumpstart their careers. 

“Being able to participate in Alamo Promise is huge for our students,” Jennifer O’Grady, counselor at Phoenix, said. “Not only can they continue and finish their Level I certificates, but this will allow them to continue and be able to complete Level II and III certificates and their associate degree in applied sciences. The majority of our students are first-generation college students and knowing that the financial burden of their college education is taken care of is a huge weight off their shoulders. This might be the thing that will actually push them toward continuing their academic journey because the fear of paying for school is eliminated.”

Nicholas Almaguer is a senior at Phoenix working on his welding Level I certification. 

“Next year I hope I’m able to get my certifications, and when I get my certification, I will continue going to Alamo Colleges for my advanced-level welding courses,” Almaguer said. “The AlamoPROMISE makes less stress on my mom, because she’s a single working mother, and right now I can’t really work because I’m committing all my time to college. It will take the load off a lot.”

Students considering utilizing the AlamoPromise are encouraged to complete their application, FAFSA or TASFA, and their Save Your Seat form by the priority guarantee date of Feb. 28, 2022. Students who apply after this date can still be accepted as Promise Scholars on a space available basis.

Más estudiantes de San Antonio ISD podrán recibir una educación superior asequible en los Alamo Colleges gracias a una expansión reciente del programa AlamoPROMISE que entrará en efecto en otoño de 2022. El programa, que garantiza acceso a la educación superior al cubrir el costo de la matrícula y las tarifas obligatorias para los estudiantes que se gradúan de la preparatoria en el área de San Antonio, se ha ampliado en SAISD para incluir a los estudiantes de último año de Advanced Learning Academy, CAST Tech High School, Cooper Academy at Navarro, St. Philip’s Early College High School, Travis Early College High School y Young Men’s Leadership Academy.

 
Las escuelas se unen a las demás escuelas preparatorias generales del distrito y a Young Women’s Leadership Academy cuyos estudiantes ya reciben fondos de beca de etapa final, los cuales, al agregarse a cualquier otra ayuda federal o estatal que reciba el estudiante, cubrirán la matrícula del estudiante y las tarifas obligatorias en cualquiera de las cinco escuelas de los Alamo Colleges, un costo de más de $3,000 al año.  

 
“SAISD es uno de nuestros socios más fuertes”, dijo Stephanie Vasquez, directora ejecutiva del programa de AlamoPROMISE. “La mayoría de nuestros Estudiantes de Promise vienen de SAISD, y queremos asegurarnos de mantener una fuerte colaboración con el distrito para garantizar que los estudiantes puedan asistir a nuestras escuelas sin la carga financiera”.

“Esta es una ayuda increíble para las familias”, dijo Jocelyn More, Consejera Universitaria de Young Men’s Leadership Academy.“ Algunas familias podrían ganar más de $50,000 y en teoría podrían ayudar a pagar la educación de su hijo/a, sin embargo, su declaración de impuestos no refleja la realidad que la mayoría de las familias enfrentan de tener gastos que no se reportan en una declaración de impuestos anual”.

 
Evan Rivera-Gonzales, estudiante de último año de preparatoria de YMLA tiene pensado ingresar a un programa 2+2 a medida que comienza su educación para una profesión en Administración Deportiva. Él estaba preocupado sobre el gasto de pagar por la universidad, especialmente después de que su mamá le advirtió sobre la dificultad de pagar los préstamos para estudiantes.

 
“Nos ayudará a ahorrar dinero, en especial si ocurre algo inesperado”, dijo Rivera-Gonzales. 

 
En Phoenix Middle College, donde los estudiantes reciben sus créditos de preparatoria a través de Cooper Academy at Navarro mientras trabajan para recibir una certificación de la industria en el campus suroeste de St. Philip's College, la implementación de Promise significa que más estudiantes podrán recibir certificaciones para impulsar sus carreras. 

 
“El poder participar en Alamo Promise es una gran oportunidad para nuestros estudiantes”, dijo Jennifer O’Grady, consejera en Phoenix. “No solo pueden continuar y terminar certificados de Nivel I, sino que esto les permitirá continuar y poder completar certificados de Nivel II y III, al igual que su título asociado en ciencias aplicadas. La mayoría de nuestros estudiantes son estudiantes universitarios de primera generación y el saber que la carga financiera de su educación universitaria está pagada les quita un gran peso de los hombros. Esto podría ser lo que los impulsará a continuar su trayectoria académica porque elimina el miedo de pagar la matrícula”.

 
Nicholas Almaguer es estudiante de último año de preparatoria en Phoenix y está trabajando hacia su certificación de Nivel I en soldadura. 

 
“El año que entra espero poder recibir mis certificaciones, y cuando las reciba, seguiré asistiendo a Alamo Colleges para recibir mis cursos de nivel avanzado en soldadura”, dijo Almaguer. “El programa de AlamoPROMISE le quita estrés a mi mamá, porque es una madre soltera que trabaja y por el momento, yo no puedo trabajar ya que estoy dedicando mi tiempo a la universidad. Ayudará a aligerar la carga considerablemente”.

 
Se les anima a los estudiantes que están considerando usar AlamoPromise que completen su solicitud, FAFSA o TASFA y el formulario para Reservar Su Asiento para la fecha de prioridad el 28 de feb. de 2022. Los estudiantes que solicitan ingreso después de esta fecha aún pueden ser aceptados como Estudiantes de Promise en base a la disponibilidad de espacio.
